You Are Light

Think about the moon

It has no light yet it gives off light in the dark of night

You could say the moon is light

But without the sun there would be no light at night from the moon

Paul in writing to the Ephesians in Chapter 5 says 

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.

Live as Children of Light. vs.8

Fruit of the Light is “in all goodness, righteousness and truth”

"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:14-16

You Are Light

Think about the moon.

You and I are like the moon.

 We were once darkness, but

now that we have received the

Light of Christ we give off light.

So what are the Children of Light?

Verse 9 tells us the Light has fruit.

Fruit of the Light is…

 “in all goodness, righteousness and truth”

In order to be Children of Light we

have to consist of…

 “ALL” “Goodness”

All “Righteousness”

and All “Truth”

The Light is always seeking what pleases the Lord. 

vs. 10

The Children of Light expose the

fruitless deeds of darkness.

 vs. 11

Light makes things visible.

Think about a flashlight…

 You can aim it at the issues or you

can aim it at the eyes of someone.

As Children of Light we are not to

blind others, but expose issues or

fruit of darkness with all goodness,

righteousness, and truth.

 

The illustration Paul gives is

waking someone up from sleeping…

"Wake up, O sleeper,

rise from the dead,

and Christ will shine on you."

I have found you need to be careful

how you wake someone up.

Some people wake up quickly

and others hit the snooze.

Some get up excited and others

would rather sleep all day.

This is why we need to be

sensitive to how we wake people.

Paul puts it this way…

Be very careful, then, how you live —

not as unwise but as wise,

 making the most of every opportunity,

because the days are evil.

Be careful, be wise and use opportunities to

wake people out of their sleep or darkness.

We can be foolish with the Light, therefore,

we need to know where and how to shine it.

Therefore do not be foolish, but

understand what the Lord's will is.

We are Light only because of Christ.

We cannot make light like

the moon cannot make light.

But we can reflect Light and in doing

so we look like we are the Light.

Therefore, it is so important we

know what the will of the Lord is.

When we know God’s will we can

produce Light that will transform lives. 

But if we don’t know God’s will…

 Our Light might be unnecessarily offensive

or we might fall asleep ourselves.

8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9(for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, 14 for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said:

"Wake up, O sleeper,

and Christ will shine on you."
