Jesus’ Words in Red Purpose of the Holy Spirit

Jesus’ Words in Red

Purpose of the Holy Spirit

I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever
— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him

Let us welcome the Holy Spirit Jesus requested of the Father for us
Doesn’t Jesus’ Words make you want to be filled with His Spirit?

Purpose of the Holy Spirit

My Father will love him, and we will
come to him and make our home with him.

Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said,
"But, Lord, why do you intend to show
yourself to us and not to the world?"
John 14:22

Judas is asking a very important question…

Why Us?

Jesus makes it clear.

The first thing Jesus addresses is who the “Us” is…

"If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching.

For this group of people who love and obey
God, Jesus goes to His Father with a request.

The request is that the Father would give them the Spirit.

Notice who the Spirit is…

Counselor V16

Spirit of Truth V.17

Holy Spirit V.26

Second, we need to see what the Spirit does for us.

“I will not leave you as orphans;
I will come to you.” V. 18

“For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba,  Father." The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs — heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ”
Romans 8: 15-17

“if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ,
he does not belong to Christ.”
Romans 8:9

The Spirit of the Father makes us Children of the Father.

FAMILY!!!

So how does this work?

Counselor to be with you forever V.16

you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. V.18

we will come to him and make our home with him. V.23

Although Jesus leaves the
World to be with the Father…

The Spirit of God will live in us and
with us, the home of God will be with us.

That is amazing and wonderful.

Not only does the Spirit
make us Children of the Father.

“But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. V. 26-27

The Spirit will teach us, bring back to our
remembrance what we need when we need it.

The Spirit will also give us peace.

Let us welcome the Holy Spirit
Jesus requested of the Father for us.

Doesn’t Jesus’ Words make you
want to be filled with His Spirit.

Scripture Reading

John 14:15-31 NIV

15 "If you love me, you will obey what I command. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him."

22 Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, "But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?"

23 Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.

25 "All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

28 "You heard me say, 'I am going away and I am coming back to you.' If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. 30 I will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold on me, 31 but the world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what my Father has commanded me.

"Come now; let us leave.

Romans 8:9-17 NIV

9 You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

12 Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation — but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. 13 For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, 14 because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba,  Father." 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs — heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
