Jesus’ Words in Red
The Position of the Holy Spirit
But you
know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
God wants His Spirit
to be positioned in your life
We are like a cup
The Spirit “In you” Rebirth
The Spirit “Upon you” Baptism of the Spirit
The Spirit “Filling you” Giving thanks and praise
Be like Jesus who
had the Spirit without measure
For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God,
for God gives the Spirit without limit. John 3:34 NIV
The Position of the
Holy Spirit
Where is the Holy Spirit?
Jesus told Nicodemus you must be born of the Spirit.
When Jesus said you must be born again, He also said…
“The wind blows wherever it pleases.
You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where
it comes from or where it is going.
So it is with everyone born of the Spirit."
John 3:8
It would seem seeing the Holy Spirit and
knowing where He is at is not possible.
Yet, the Scriptures do tell us of 3 workings
of the Holy Spirit or three positions the
Holy Spirit takes in the life of the believer.
The Bible does not give a comprehensive picture
of the Holy Spirit’s work in the Old Testament.
We can see the Holy Spirit gave certain abilities.
Exodus
31:1-3
The Spirit of God could come
upon a person and also depart.
1 Samuel
10:10 & 1 Samuel 16:14
It is interesting that Jesus says in John 14:17…
“For he lives with you and will be in you.”
It would seem Jesus was supporting the idea
that the Spirit was “with”
the Old Testament
believer but there was a time coming
when the Spirit would be “in”
the believer.
After Jesus rose from the dead, he appeared to
the disciples, it is very interesting what Jesus did…
Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am
sending you."
And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive
the Holy Spirit”
John
20:21-22
Jesus imparted the Holy Spirit
as He breathed on the disciples.
In this 40 days after Jesus rose from
the dead He told the disciples to…
"Do not leave
Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised,
which you have heard
me speak about. 5 For John baptized with water,
but in a few days you
will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."
…you will receive
power when the Holy Spirit comes “on” you;
and you will be my
witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria,
and to the ends of the
earth." Acts 1:4-8
This is the second experience the
disciples had with the Holy Spirit.
It was at this experience that
Peter quoted the prophet Joel…
'In the last days, God
says, I will
pour out my Spirit on all people.
Acts 2:17
The special abilities of the Spirit coming
“on” people would
be on the young and old
male and female and slave and free, “all people”.
The third work of the Holy Spirit
comes in the way of a command…
“be filled with the
Spirit. 19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and
make music in your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father
for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Ephesians 5:18-20
Work #1 of the Holy Spirit
Spirit “IN” you
Jesus said the Spirit would be in you, a rebirthing.
It seems this is what
happened to the
disciples as Jesus breathed on them.
This is the born again experience.
Work #2 of the Holy Spirit
Spirit “UPON” you
This is the yielding to the
special workings of the Spirit.
The power of the Spirit upon us to serve.
Work #3 of the Holy Spirit
“INFILLING” of
Spirit
Jesus had the Spirit without measure.
We, too, are to be in the presence of
the Lord with worship and praise in
order to be filled and keep filled up.
The Spirit is like a fuel for a light.
As the light shines it uses the fuel.
The fuel needs to be added in
order for the light to keep shining.
Is the Holy Spirit positioned?
“In” you
“Upon” you
And
Are you “full” of
the Spirit?
Scripture Reading
John 14:15-31 NIV
15 "If you love me, you will
obey what I command. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another
Counselor to be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot
accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he
lives with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will
come to you. 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will
see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will realize
that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Whoever has my
commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be
loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him."
22 Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, "But, Lord,
why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?"
23 Jesus replied, "If anyone
loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come
to him and make our home with him. 24 He who does not love me will not obey my
teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who
sent me.
25 "All this I have spoken
while still with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father
will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of
everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.
I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and
do not be afraid.
28 "You heard me say, 'I am
going away and I am coming back to you.' If you loved me, you would be glad
that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 I have told
you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. 30 I
will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming. He
has no hold on me, 31 but the world must learn that I love the Father and that
I do exactly what my Father has commanded me.
"Come now; let us leave.
