Jesus’ Words in Red Do You Know Me?

Jesus’ Words in Red

Do You Know Me?

"Don't you know me, Philip, even after
I have been among you such a long time?

So often we think we know someone
Phillip, in his longtime relationship with Jesus, did not recognize
That everything He said and did was to reveal the Father
How well do you know Him?
Are you confident that if you ask for anything in His name He will do it?
Has your life and His life become one
As the Father and the Son are one?

Do You Know Me?

Philip asked…

"Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us."

What did Philip want Jesus to reveal?

What did Philip want to see?

You and I have the same quest.

Make the Father visible to us.

Jesus’ response is…

"Don't you know me?”

I have to be honest I have been
walking with the Lord all my life.

My earliest memories of a child all have
to do with experiences with the Lord.

Yet, I find myself like Philip…

Wanting to get a visual of God.

Only to realize later I was looking at
Him all the time and did not realize it.

What does it mean to “Know Me”?

Our knowledge of someone
starts with little information.

It could be you were told
their name, you heard about them.

If we were asked if we knew
that person we would say yes.

But knowing a person goes deeper.

Sandy and I like hockey.

Sandy researches the players off the ice,
like are they married,
how many children do they have,
what events are going on in their lives.

I on the other hand want to know how
well they skate and how hard they can hit.

We may know them by what we read
or seen, but we have never met them?

As relationships grow, knowing a person grows.

Knowing them by name and
back ground become personal.

We develop feelings,
our emotional ties increase.

Although we may care about a stranger, knowing
a person increases the emotional relationship.

There are people who do all the talking, although
you may get to know them, they will more than
likely not know you well even though they may think so.

Jesus realized Phillip did not recognize what he had
seen and heard over the years of walking with Jesus.

Jesus in this passage is revealing that
He and the Father are one.

And just a little later Jesus, the Father,
and the Holy Spirit are one.

Down through the ages we have debated…

Is God like an egg, 3 in one, or
like water, one with 3 forms.

Jesus is not answering this question but He is
letting us know the words and works of Jesus
are the same as the words and works of the Father.

Jesus is saying when you put your faith in
Me you are putting your faith in God.

Jesus now takes Phillip’s question to
the deepest level of knowing someone.

This level of knowledge is trust, confidence and faith.

Jesus even takes this level of knowing Him even deeper.

This level is where our knowledge and feelings
cause us to do the very same things He is doing.

When we come to this depth of
relationship (knowing Him) Jesus says…

“I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”

How well do you know Him?

Are you confident that if you ask for
anything in His Name He will do it?

Has your life and His life become one…

As the Father and the Son are one?

Scripture Reading

John 14:8-14 NIV

8 Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us."

9 Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? 10 Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves. 12 I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.
