 Wisdom Regarding the Family
The Necessities of Life

It is important to keep in mind life is short.

How quickly our children grow up.

This race against time becomes very important.

We cannot afford to waste time or
make rash or foolish decisions.

This not only matters in this short life but eternity.

The value of wisdom in the
family relationship is paramount.

“He who brings trouble on his family will inherit only wind,
and the fool will be servant to the wise.”
Proverbs 11:29 NIV

Life is too short, families grow up too fast.

Earthly and eternal destiny is too valuable,
to raise our families by a trial and error.

When starting a family the first
thing we think about is “provision”.

What will my family need and how will I provide?

Concerning the basics of food shelter and
clothing Jesus says, “Don’t worry” over these things.

I grew up in a two bedroom house
with only one bedroom having a
door the other a large arch opening.

Five of us, my mother, two brothers, sister
and I lived in this small 736 sq. ft. house.

We did not have a car because my
mother did not have a driver’s license.

Yes, we lived in poverty but I grew up
being loved and the respect of the Lord.

The finer things, luxury and good education have merit
but you will not find these as the focus of provision
in The Book of Proverbs or the teachings of Jesus.

Foundational to the family’s needs
is a healthy fear of the Lord.

Instilling respect for God

“Better a little with the fear of the LORD
than great wealth with turmoil.”
Proverbs 15:16 NIV

It was the fear of the Lord that
kept me from foolish ways.

As I look back on my life I know without
the fear of the Lord I would have
suffered greatly from foolish choices.

So what does “The Fear of the Lord” Provide?

The beginning of Knowledge
Proverbs 1:7

My fear of the Lord caused me to
know I could not plead ignorance.

I knew God wanted me to know and He wanted
me to ask Him concerning the questions of life.

Provides prolonged life
Proverbs 10:27

Jesus said, I am the way the truth and the life.

We all have seen foolish actions lead to early death.

The fear of the Lord causes us to avoid sin
Proverbs 16:6

 When you know God is
watching it changes your behavior.

The fear of the Lord brings wealth and honor and life
Proverbs 22:4

When in humility we fear the
Lord it opens doors of blessing.

It becomes clear that the most important “provision”
we can give our family is a healthy respect of the Lord.

Provide an environment of love

“Better a meal of vegetables where there is love
than a fattened calf with hatred.
Proverbs 15:17 NIV

Troubled children come from homes
where love is lacking, not money.

Provide an environment of peace

“Better a dry crust with peace and quiet
than a house full of feasting, with strife.”
Proverbs 17:1 NIV

Where the spiritual environment is emphases,
turmoil and stress over material things is limited.

Be Righteous

“The righteous man leads a blameless life;
blessed are his children after him.”
Proverbs 20:7 NIV

Jesus says the key to all our needs is to...

Seek first the Kingdom of God and
all His Righteousness and
everything else will be added to us
 Matthew 6:33

If you work on filling your family with wisdom
and knowledge the material things will come.

“By wisdom a house is built, and through
understanding it is established;
through knowledge its rooms are filled
with rare and beautiful treasures.”
Proverbs 24:3-4 NIV

Scripture Reading

Colossians 2:1-4

2 My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
