Marriage Choosing a Husband

Love at First Sight

What can you see at first sight, strong body, money, nice car?

If you are looking for a husband you will want to take a second look.

The choice is for the rest of your life.

Look for a man who cares, how does he treat people, animals, things?
Proverbs 12:10

Does he listen to advice from others?
Proverbs 12:15

What type of companions does he keep?
Proverbs 13:20

Is he quick-tempered, a patient man gains understanding?
Proverbs 14:29

Does he feel like he always has to put in his two cents worth
or have the last word, being able to show restraint and
be even tempered reveals knowledge and understanding?
Proverbs 17:27-28

Does he have compassion on the less fortunate?
If not, his prayer will be hindered when he needs help.
Proverbs 21:13

Proverbs is clear on the type of men to avoid.

Beware of the womanizer, the man who flaunts and flirts.
Proverbs 6:27-29

Avoid a hot-tempered man one easily angered.
Proverbs 22:24

Although the Bible does not say you can
not drink, it does say a lot about drunkenness.

A man that turns to a drink to get relief
from stress will find stress is a way of life,
they will always need a drink.

Many good men have been destroyed
and their families by drinking and drugs.
Proverbs 23:29-35

When looking for a husband,
two heavy weights weigh on your decision…

Who will you spend your life with?

Divorce is not an option for the faithful Christian.
Matthew 19:6

There is one exception…
 Matthew 19:9

Even though society has opened the door for divorce for any reason
and not marrying so you don’t have the legal responsibility to stay,
are a clear message today.

Divorce and separation have lasting consequences
for the couple and children if they have them.

This brings us to the second heavy weight…

Who shall be the father of your children?

Divorce is a violent action with lasting effects.

Children will suffer from those effects all their lives.
Proverbs has a lot more to say on this matter
and so does the rest of God’s Word.

The wise person will seek council from God’s Word
and prayer before and during the decision
process of choosing a spouse.

Marriage is a wonderful God ordained covenant.

Its relationship is to be compared to
the relationship of Christ and the Church.

Its blessings are beyond measure if the
husband and wife follow God’s directions.

Scripture Reading

 Ephesians 5:15-33 NIV

15 Be very careful, then, how you live — not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. …

22 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church— 30 for we are members of his body. 31 "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh."   32 This is a profound mystery — but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
