The Palm Tree

The Planting of the Lord

By William M. Self, Sr.

“The righteous will flourish like a palm tree” Psalm 92:12

It is said a Palm Tree’s roots grow deeper after a storm

And the older it gets the better the fruit

The Palm Tree

God uses two trees to describe our righteousness.

In Isaiah 61, He said we are like the Oak Tree.

The Oak Tree is a tree of strength, it stands tall and firm.

The other tree is the Palm Tree.

This is the tree that God plants in His house
and court yard according to Psalms 92.

This too, is a Tree of Righteousness.

It flourishes even in its old age.

The branches of this tree were
used at the Feast of Tabernacles.

In Revelation 7, Matthew 21 and John 12 the
branches were a symbol of victory and praise.

"Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel
that cometh in the name of the Lord."

The Palm Tree is a strong tree
but not like the Oak Tree.

The Palm Tree bends in
the winds of a hurricane.

As Trees of Righteousness, we need to know when
to be like an Oak Tree unmovable and when to be
like a Palm Tree that bends in the storms.

Both trees stand because of their deep root structure.

Both trees can teach us about righteousness.

Doing the right thing is always a sign of strength.

But sometimes the right thing is to bend.

There are times when the right thing is to be
flexible and times when the right thing is to be ridged.

Even though the Palm Tree is flexible,
it does not move from its foundation.

When the winds stop, it stands
like it did before the storm.

The Palm Tree teaches us to be caring and gentle.

It is said that the roots of a Palm Tree goes deeper
after a wind storm has caused it to bend.

It shows us how to handle life
without becoming legalistic.

The wind causes both trees to clap their
hands in righteous praise to God.

Another characteristic of the Palm Tree,
is the older it gets the better the fruit.

Be a Tree of Righteousness.

Scripture Reading

Isaiah 61:3 NIV
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
a planting of the Lord
for the display of his splendor.

Psalm 92:12-15 NIV
12 The righteous will flourish like a palm tree,
they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon;
13 planted in the house of the Lord,
they will flourish in the courts of our God.
14 They will still bear fruit in old age,
they will stay fresh and green,
15 proclaiming, "The Lord is upright;
he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him."
