No Fruit

Planting of the Lord

By William M. Self, Sr.

Fruit trees that do not bear fruit

Are trees that are concerned with producing

More wood than fruit

They look good but don’t do good

Blossom today – do the right thing

So you can bear fruit

No Fruit

A couple of years ago I planted some fruit trees.

I had to plant two plum trees in order to get plums.

These trees must cross pollinate with another plum tree.

The one tree is growing much fuller.

The fuller tree has not produced fruit
and very few buds the last two springs.

The other tree 15 feet away, produces
lots of buds and lots of fruit.

The other day I looked at the tree
that does not produce fruit.

I found myself angry that it was not doing
what I bought and planted it for.

It is a very good looking tree, but my first
thought was to cut it down and get another tree.

After doing a little research, I found the tree
may be getting too much fertilizer or I may not
have been aggressive enough in my pruning.

The point is I am going to
give the tree another year.

My tree is more concerned with
 producing wood then fruit.

More concerned with looking
 good than bearing fruit.

Jesus tells a parable about a tree just like my tree.

In His parable, you can see the Gardner is
more concerned with fruit than looks.

The Gardner agrees to give grace and give
the tree another year to produce fruit.

Every day you and I are given
opportunities to blossom…

To do the right thing.

Blossoms are short lived
unlike the limbs and leaves.

Doing the right thing counts.

Without it we will not have fruit.

You know the right thing to do today…

Your limbs and leaves show it.

So now do what is right that you
 might blossom and bear fruit.

Scripture Reading

 Isaiah 61:3 NIV
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
a planting of the Lord

Luke 13:6-9 NIV
6 Then he told this parable: "A man had a fig tree, planted in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it, but did not find any. 7 So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, 'For three years now I've been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven't found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?'

8 "'Sir,' the man replied, 'leave it alone for one more year, and I'll dig around it and fertilize it. 9 If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.'"
