The Death of a Seed

The Planting of the Lord

By William M. Self, Sr.

Jesus said, “Unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies,
it remains only a single seed.”

A wise man asked for a simple payment. He took a chess board and placed one grain of wheat in the first square, two in the second, four in the third, 16 in the fourth, 256 in the fifth. He asked simply that the numbers were used for every square of the chess board.

If the amount doubles on every square then the total would be 18,446,744,073,709,551,615 grains

The Death of a Seed

Seeds are so amazing.

They come in all sizes and different shapes.

A seed must come from a plant.

Jesus speaks of a seed of wheat in John 12.

Wheat is a cereal grain originally from the area
where Jesus was from in the Near East.

Now wheat is cultivated worldwide.

In 2010, the world produced 651 million tons
of wheat, making it the third most-produced
cereal after maize (corn) and rice.

Wheat is grown on more land
than any other commercial food.

World trade in wheat is greater
than all other crops combined.

It is amazing to see the effects and growth of
wheat since Jesus spoke of it in John 12.

A seed or kernel of wheat is very small,
seemingly insignificant in size…

But its potential is incredible.

Jesus uses this little seed to demonstrate
 the power of His death.

A wheat seed takes 2-3 days to germinate.

Jesus was in the grave 3 days until
He arose with a transformed body.

Because of the death, burial and
 Resurrection, the Gospel is now
produced through the whole world.

Jesus said the little seed had to die to its self.

It had to be willing to become something greater.

When the seed goes into the ground,
something happens to the seed.

The death and burial of that tiny seed
comes alive in the darkness of its life.

In a short time, the seed is no longer recognized.

The seed is no longer called a seed…
it is transformed into a plant capable
 of producing 40 seeds.

Don’t let death scare you… It is God’s way
of making you alive and prosperous.

Scripture Reading

Isaiah 61:3 NIV
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
a planting of the Lord
for the display of his splendor.

John 12:23-28 NIV
23 Jesus replied, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 25 The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.

27 "Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name!"
