Jesus’ Words in Red
Without Sin
"If
any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at
her."
The first stone of
condemnation is hate powered by anger
God hates sin yet He
did not come to condemn us
Jesus tells the
woman caught in adultery
"Then
neither do I condemn you,"… "Go now
and leave your life of sin."
Jesus did not
respond in hate to condemn, but in love to restore
This woman was
released to make right the wrongs in her life
We don’t know what
happened to the adulteress
But we can see the
lives of so many who were freed from condemnation
Go on to live loving
and meaningful lives
Give others the
opportunity to do right
None of us are
without sin, so be careful of condemning
Without Sin
Adultery is forbidden as one of
the 10 commandments.
Exodus 20:14
Leaving your married spouse
may be legal, but Jesus says…
“I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife,
except for marital unfaithfulness,
and marries another woman commits adultery."
Matthew 19:9
NIV
Jesus said adultery is not just physical.
Matthew
5:28-29
“I tell you that anyone who looks at a
woman lustfully has already committed
adultery with her in
his heart.”
Matthew 5:29
NIV
Doesn’t the Bible teach that adulterers go to hell?
Revelation
21:8
“The sexually immoral
nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes
nor homosexual
offenders 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards
nor slanderers nor
swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.”
1 Corinthians
6:9-10 NIV
Jesus demonstrated His message on the mount.
"Do not judge, or you too will
be judged. 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with
the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
3 "Why do you look at the speck
of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own
eye? 4 How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your
eye,' when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite,
first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to
remove the speck from your brother's eye.
Matthew
7:1-5 NIV
None of us are without sin,
so none of us have
the right to
throw a condemning stone.
It seems the teachers of the law
and the Pharisees got the message.
It seem from the oldest to the youngest
they were able to see the sin in
their own lives and walked away.
Jesus again points
out He did not come into the world
to condemn it and here is a practical example…
"Then neither do I condemn you,"…
"Go now and leave
your life of sin."
I think Jesus believed she was guilty but
restoring her was greater than condemning her.
The apostle Paul addresses the church at
Corinth for taking each other to the world’s courts…
To a system that determines wrong and punishes it.
Paul says the weakest
in the church
should be able to judge these matter.
Pointing out that there will be a day
when we, the church, will judge angels.
Jesus and Paul are not removing
our responsibility to judge matters.
What Jesus and Paul are pointing out is…
1.
We were also sinners and Christ forgave us
2.
Our responsibility to judge is not to condemn
but to restore
Jesus gave this adulteress woman
the opportunity to make things right.
We should live with hope that the conviction
of the Holy Spirit will work in the heart
of the offender like He did in our heart.
We should hope that the offender
would not continue to live a
condemned life but a life of restoration.
When we give people mercy,
it is so that they
can
make right the wrong.
Those who do not make right
the wrong continue in their sin.
Paul also points out that the church should appoint
believes to deal with the matters of offense.
The Church is a place to help people
who are offended and the offenders to
live a live without sin, a restored life.
When Jesus said…
"Go now and leave your life of
sin."
Was He just saying don’t have sex outside
of marriage or was He also saying…
Go make things right at home with your husband.
We don’t know what this woman did with her life.
But we can see people forgiven by Jesus
who’s life have been turned around.
Where relationships are restored.
Where love and good works are demonstrated.
Many times Jesus points out He
did not come to condemn and
we too should follow in His steps.
But it does not mean sin should not be judged.
But in love we should desire to see sinners restored.
What if the person who was stealing
was to steal no more and to work doing
something useful and to give to the needy?
Ephesians
4:28 NIV
That is life change and our love for others
should help others live a changed life.
"Go now and leave your life of sin."
None of us are without sin,
so be careful of
condemning.
Scripture Reading
John 8:1-11 NIV
8:1 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 At dawn he
appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him,
and he sat down to teach them. 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees
brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4
and said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.
5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?"
6 They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for
accusing him.
But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with
his finger. 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to
them, "If any one of you is without sin, let him
be the first to throw a stone at her." 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the
ground.
9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time,
the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing
there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, "Woman,
where are they? Has no one condemned you?"
11 "No one, sir," she said.
"Then neither do I condemn
you," Jesus declared.
"Go now and leave your life of
sin."
