Jesus’ Words in Red
“I Am”
"Before
Abraham was born, I am!"
The Great I AM is
the eternal I AM
Yes, John in his
gospel gives us 7 I AMS of Jesus
I am the Bread, I am
the Light, I am the Gate or Door, I am the Shepard, I am the Resurrection, I am
the Way, I am the Vine,
These 7 only gives
us a taste of what is meant by “I Am”
I wonder if the
reason why the creatures in Revelation 4:8 keep going around the throne day and
night without stopping is because each time they go around the throne of Jesus
they see another aspect of who Jesus is
Their response
should be our response
"Holy, Holy, Holy, is
the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!"
The Great “I AM”
hopefully has become many things to you but
The Great “I AM”…
Always Was and Is and Is to Come
Many things come and
go
But our security is
in the Great I Am who
Is the same
Yesterday, Today and Forever
Whatever your need
is He is the I Am for that need
“I Am”
When you hear the words “I am”
the question “what?”
jumps out.
If I was to say to you “I am?
You would ask “What am I?”
I could tell you all the things I have become…
I am older, I am a husband, I am father.
I could list the occupations and skills I
have gained like I am a welder, a pastor.
These are all things I was not when I was born.
When I was born…
I am a child, a male,
a human.
The list at birth is of what “I am” is very short
compared to 60 years later and the things “I become”.
But before birth I had no
“I am” because “I am” nothing.
Jesus in John 8:58 says…
"Before Abraham was born, I
am!"
What a claim.
What could Jesus be claiming?
To understand this we need to look at Exodus 3.
Moses was called to be the deliver
of the children of
Abraham.
This is a parallel to Jesus called to be
the Deliverer and Savior to not only
the children of Abraham but the World.
When God addressed Moses, Moses said…
“Here I am”
Then God told Moses he is the God of Abraham.
After God told him the mission of deliverance
He wants Moses to do Moses said…
“Who am I”
All that Moses had become up to that point in his
life had not given him the confidence that he
was the man to do what God was calling him to do.
God told Moses to say “I AM WHO I AM”
tell the people “I AM has sent you”.
This same picture is being
played out again in John 8.
But this time Jesus was in the place of Moses
and Jesus was not asking “who am I”.
When Jesus says…
"Before Abraham was born, I
am!"
He is not saying what He has
become He is saying what He is.
The very voice that said to Moses
“I am the God of Abraham” and
“I am who I am has sent you”
is the very voice of Jesus.
We, for the most part, are what we become.
Jesus “IS”.
Jesus never questioned who
He was, like Moses or you and I.
Jesus knew who He was and
where He had come from.
His start did not begin at birth because
He had no beginning and has no end.
Jesus Christ is the
same yesterday and today and forever.
Revelation 1:8
"I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God,
Revelation 1:8
"I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God,
who is and was and
is to come--the Almighty.
Revelation 4:8
And each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around and within. Day and night they never stop saying: "Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!"
Revelation 4:8
And each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around and within. Day and night they never stop saying: "Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!"
The Great I AM is the eternal I AM.
Yes, John in his gospel gives us 7 I Ams of Jesus…
I am the Bread John 6:35
I am the Light John 8:12
I am the Gate or Door John 10:9
I am the Shepard John 10:11
I am the Resurrection John 11:25
I am the Way John 14:6
I am the Vine John 15:1
These 7 only gives us a taste
of what is meant by “I Am”.
I wonder if the reason why the creatures in
Revelation 4:8 keep going around the throne
day and night without stopping is because
each time they go around the throne of Jesus
they see another aspect of who Jesus is.
Their response should be our response…
"Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord God Almighty,
who was and is and is to come!"
The Great “I Am” hopefully has
become many things to you but…
The Great “I AM”
Always Was and Is and Is to Come.
Many things come and go.
But our security is in the Great I Am who
is the same Yesterday, Today and Forever.
Whatever your need is
He is the I Am for that need.
Scripture Reading
John 8:48-59 NIV
48 The Jews answered him, "Aren't we right in saying
that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?"
49 "I am not possessed by a
demon," said Jesus, "but I honor my
Father and you dishonor me. 50 I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is
one who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 I tell you the truth, if anyone keeps
my word, he will never see death."
52 At this the Jews exclaimed, "Now we know that you
are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that if
anyone keeps your word, he will never taste death. 53 Are you greater than our
father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you
are?"
54 Jesus replied, "If I glorify
myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the
one who glorifies me. 55 Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I
did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and keep his word. 56
Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was
glad."
57 "You are not yet fifty years old," the Jews
said to him, "and you have seen Abraham!"
58 "I tell you the truth,"
Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I
am!" 59 At this, they picked
up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple
grounds.
