Jesus’ Words in Red
Digesting the Bread
of Life
"It is the one to whom I will give this
piece of bread
when I
have dipped it in the dish."
Jesus said
“I am the living bread that came down from heaven.
If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever.
This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the
world."
Jesus in the night He was betrayed took the bread and said to the
Disciples
“Take eat this is my body”
All the disciples took the bread
Jesus Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas
Iscariot, son of Simon.
As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into
him. John 13:25-27
Judas did not digest “The Bread of Life”, “The Word of God” in his
heart
Judas chose to digest the natural bread that only
sustains for a day and Satan filled his heart
Choose not only to hear the Word of God,
Digest it until it becomes a part of you
Digesting the Bread
of Life
God fed the children of Israel manna (bread) from Heaven.
This bread sustained them for a day.
Day after day they gathered the bread
and all who ate that bread eventually died.
Therefore God said…
“Man does not live on bread alone but on
every word that comes
from the mouth of the LORD.”
Deuteronomy 8:3
He humbled you,
causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor
your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but
on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.
Jesus when tempted by the devil in the wilderness declared
to the devil,
He is sustained by the Word of God not daily bread.
Matthew 4:4
Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone,
but on every word that comes from the mouth of
God.'"
In John 6, Jesus tied these two passages
together along with John 13.
Jesus in John 6 declares…
“I am the Bread of Life.”
Jesus said those who eat the manna in the wilderness died.
Jesus said…
“Your forefathers ate the manna in the desert,
yet they died.”
John 6:49
Jesus claims He is the Bread from Heaven
and that sustains for eternity.
Jesus said…
“I am the living bread that came down from
heaven.
If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever.
This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the
world."
John 6:51
At the end of John 6, many could
not accept His words and left.
The disciples stayed but did not
understand the message of the Bread.
Then in the last 2 verses we read…
70 Then Jesus replied,
"Have I not chosen you, the Twelve?
Yet one of you is a devil!" 71(He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot,
who, though one of the
Twelve, was later to betray him.)
Knowing this history we get a better understanding
how Jesus revealed who the betrayer is.
Leaning back against
Jesus, he asked him, "Lord, who is it?"
Jesus answered, "It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread
when I have dipped it in the dish." Then, dipping the piece of
bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon. As soon as Judas took the
bread, Satan entered into him.
John 13:25-27
Jesus all along knew it would
be Judas who would betray Him.
Judas, like the other disciples, received
the Bread of Life as they walked with Him.
Jesus did not hold back the Bread of Life
even though many rejected it.
Judas in the end chose to take the
natural bread but not the spiritual bread.
Judas looked healthy on the outside
yet was starving on the inside.
Even the other disciple could not see
Judas was unhealthy on the inside.
Judas chose what the devil had to offer to sustain
him as did Adam and
Eve in the garden.
Adam and Eve lived in the fullness of God’s provision.
Judas lived in the fullness of Jesus’ provision.
Yet, they were not satisfied.
“As soon as Judas took
the bread, Satan entered into him.”
When we come to the Lord’s Supper remember…
“Therefore, whoever
eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be
guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. A man ought to
examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. For anyone
who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks
judgment on himself. That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number
of you have fallen asleep. But if we judged ourselves, we would not come under
judgment. When we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we
will not be condemned with the world.”
1 Corinthians
11:27-32 NIV
It is no coincidence that the last verse in John 13 says…
“As soon as Judas had
taken the bread,
he went out. And it was night.”
The person who rejects the Bread of Life
will also reject the Light of the World
and live in the night or darkness.
It is not good enough to be hearers only of the Word.
We must be doers.
Just like bread must become a part
of you to be healthy and live.
So also the “Bread of Life”, the “Word of God”
must become a part of you in order
to be healthy and live eternally.
Bread is meant to be digested.
Scripture Reading
John 13:21-30 NIV
21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and
testified, "I tell you the truth, one of you is
going to betray me."
22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know
which of them he meant. 23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was
reclining next to him. 24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said,
"Ask him which one he means."
25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, "Lord, who
is it?"
26 Jesus answered, "It is the
one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the
dish." Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas
Iscariot, son of Simon. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into
him.
"What you are about to do, do
quickly," Jesus told him, 28 but no one at the meal understood why
Jesus said this to him. 29 Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought
Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the Feast, or to give
something to the poor. 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out.
And it was night.
