I John
Walk in the Light - Live in the Truth
John is the disciple of love in 1 John.
He uses the word love
at least 35 times.
Yet, in the first chapter he does
not use the word love
at all.
The first chapter is laying a foundation for his
message on love that will follow in the other 4 chapters.
In the first 4 verses of 1 John,
the point is Jesus is
real.
The next 3 verses John tells
us the message of Jesus.
“God is light” and
how we can have
fellowship with God and one another.
The word “Fellowship” in the Greek
is koinonia
(koy-nohn-ee'-ah).
It means “partnership” “participation”.
John wants us to know that the type of fellowship we are
to have with God and with other believers is not casual.
It is not the idea that we hang
out together from time to time.
It is not the idea that we share some of the same values.
God is Light.
If we say we fellowship or partner with God and
our values or conduct is in the shadows or darkness
than we lie about our fellowship with Him.
We must live by the truth or we
are not in fellowship with God.
These are strong words but the fact of
the matter is without these words God
would not be the light and the truth.
Our fellowship with God goes beyond
part time and physical service.
When we partner with Him the very thought
and attitudes inside us must be pure.
Because God’s light exposes darkness
in all of us we should note…
There is a difference between
“us partnering with God” and
“God partnering with us”.
When we partner with God,
His light exposed all kinds of secrets
in us - nothing is hid from His sight.
“For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any
double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and
marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. “Nothing in all
creation is hidden from God's sight Everything is uncovered and laid bare
before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” Hebrew 4:12-13 NIV
This is a good thing because when we walk in His
light and our darkness, and lies about it, are exposed.
Jesus’ blood poured out on the cross has
the power to “purify
us from ALL sin”.
That means in our fellowship with God
and others, change will take place in us.
When we “Walk in the
light”
we will “Live in the truth”.
When you partner and participate with God, His light
will continually reveal to you better ways of doing things.
Fellowshipping with God means
being willing to
change.
Scripture Reading
1 John 1 NIV
1:1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard,
which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have
touched — this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. 2 The life appeared; we
have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which
was with the Father and has appeared to us. 3 We proclaim to you what we have
seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our
fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. 4 We write this
to make our joy complete.
5 This is the message
we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no
darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the
darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light,
as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of
Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and
the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and
will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim
we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in
our lives.
