Blessed Are They Who Constantly Do What is Right

The Blessing

By William M. Self, Sr.

“Blessed are they who maintain justice
who constantly do what is right.”

Psalm 106:3

Blessed Are They Who Constantly Do What is Right

Lady Justice depicts justice as equipped with three symbols:

·       A sword symbolizing the court's coercive power;

·       A human scale weighing competing claims in each hand;

·       And a blindfold indicating impartiality.

 Lady Justice is not an American idea.

Since the 15th century, Lady Justice has often
 been depicted wearing a blindfold.

The blindfold represents objectivity,
in that justice is or should be meted out objectively,
 without fear or favor, regardless of identity, money,
power, or weakness; blind justice and impartiality.

Psalms 106 says…

“Blessed are they who maintain justice
who constantly do what is right.”

The courts would not have to maintain justice
if we would constantly do what is right.

The history of God’s people in this Psalm points
out the problem they had with maintaining
justice and constantly do what is right…

“They gave no thought to your miracles;
they did not remember your many kindnesses,
and they rebelled by the sea, the Red Sea.”

We go to church on Sunday and hear a
positive message on the kindness of God.

But through the week as we
 enter the real world, we forget.

The scales of justice are weighed
by what we think is right.

The power of the sword cuts to our advantage…

And our prejudice bias looks down on others.

David said…

“Against you and you only have I sinned.”

David realized the standard of Justice and what
is right must always be in the hands of God.

We must never forget what He has done.

So let’s get the blessing.

 Let us “constantly do what is right”…

In God’s eyes.

Scripture Reading

Psalm 106:3-15 NIV

3 Blessed are they who maintain justice,
who constantly do what is right.
4 Remember me, O Lord, when you show favor to your people,
come to my aid when you save them,
5 that I may enjoy the prosperity of your chosen ones,
that I may share in the joy of your nation
and join your inheritance in giving praise.
6 We have sinned, even as our fathers did;
we have done wrong and acted wickedly.
7 When our fathers were in Egypt,
they gave no thought to your miracles;
they did not remember your many kindnesses,
and they rebelled by the sea, the Red Sea.
8 Yet he saved them for his name's sake,
to make his mighty power known.
9 He rebuked the Red Sea, and it dried up;
he led them through the depths as through a desert.
10 He saved them from the hand of the foe;
from the hand of the enemy he redeemed them.
11 The waters covered their adversaries;
not one of them survived.
12 Then they believed his promises
and sang his praise.

13 But they soon forgot what he had done
and did not wait for his counsel.
14 In the desert they gave in to their craving;
in the wasteland they put God to the test.
15 So he gave them what they asked for,
but sent a wasting disease upon them.
