The Secret Place
By William M. Self, Sr.
The Psalmist pictured his provision and protection
With the Most High and under His wing
Under His Wing
A great story, but fictional, is the story of
a Yellowstone
National Park Ranger.
The story tells of an assessment
after a forest fire in 1989.
The ranger came across a charred bird and when
he moved it with a stick, three chicks scurried out.
he moved it with a stick, three chicks scurried out.
The mother bird could have flown to safety.
She refused to abandon her babies and sacrificed
her life by covering
them with her wings.
This story first came about in
1945 as in
inspirational story of
a mother hen living on a farm.
As a fire engulfs the farm, she gathers
her chicks under her
and protects them.
“The Little Red Hen”
was one of thirteen pamphlets
published by Illustrated Gospel Series
also known as “The
McCague Lessons”.
Although the stories are fictional and
not all birds care for their young…
They are an illustration that helps us understand
the spiritual from the natural.
We can be sure the Psalmist is not talking theory.
He is talking of his own experience and
this experience is available to others.
The Psalmist had not known of the death,
burial and
resurrection of Christ.
But he did know the protection
and provision of God.
He, too, gives us an illustration
from nature and the bird world.
I think the Psalmist sees his dwelling place
with God perhaps like that of the eagle.
Eagles’ nests are high and large…
a secure dwelling
place.
Under the wings, could refer to the love and
protection the eagle gives to its eggs…
Long before the eagle knows about life.
Or, the protection as a young and inexperienced chick.
Whether birds do what they do out of love or instinct...
God is motivated by His love for you.
Let Him take you under wing and raise you
up to fly above the corruption of the world.
Let His protection and provision
motivate you to love Him.
Scripture Reading
Psalm 91:1-4
NIV
91 He who
dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in
the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say
of the Lord, "He is my refuge
and my
fortress,
my God, in
whom I trust."
3 Surely he
will save you from the fowler's snare
and from the
deadly pestilence.
4 He will
cover you with his feathers,
and under
his wings you will find refuge;
his
faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
