What on Earth is God Doing?
By William M. Self,

God still
“Upholds the cause of
the oppressed”
“He Upholds the Cause of the Oppressed”
It would be presumptuous for anyone to
declare exactly what God is doing is this instant.
Yet, God does not want us to be uninformed
about what He is doing in the earth He created.
Psalms 146 gives us a small check list
of the things God is doing every day.
The first things on the list is…
“He upholds the cause
of the oppressed”
Oppression is prolonged, cruel
or unjust treatment or control.
God hates oppression.
There are times when the pain of discipline is needed.
Spare
the rod spoil the child.
Yet…
Fathers
are not to provoke their children to wrath.
When Israel turned from the Lord and became
slaves to other nations, God judged those nations.
When Egypt oppressed God’s people, scripture tells us
the more they oppressed them the more Israel multiplied.
Jesus told a parable of a widow who
was being unjustly treated.
She kept coming back
to the judge
until he finely gave her justice.
The message is…
When
we see oppression we
should pray until something happens.
According to Isaiah 58:6 the fasting God has chosen is…
“To
set the oppressed free and break every yoke”.
Where ever oppression is,
God is there to bring
justice.
Whether you are alone like a widow, defenseless like
a child or treated unjustly by a government or nation…
God cares and brings justice to those
who cry out to Him
for help.
Jesus came for the cause of the oppressed.
"The
Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because
he has anointed me
to
preach good news to the poor.
He
has sent me to proclaim freedom for the
prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to
release the oppressed,
to proclaim the year of the Lord's
favor."
Luke
4:18-19
We can rest assured that when we
are treated unjustly God cares.
If we cry out to Him, He will tell us…
“Vengeance
is mine I will repay says the Lord”
Scripture Reading
Psalm
146:6-10 NIV
6 the Maker
of heaven and earth,
the sea, and
everything in them —
the Lord,
who remains faithful forever.
7 He upholds
the cause of the oppressed
and gives
food to the hungry.
The Lord
sets prisoners free,
8 the Lord
gives sight to the blind,
the Lord
lifts up those who are bowed down,
the Lord
loves the righteous.
9 The Lord
watches over the alien
and sustains
the fatherless and the widow,
but he
frustrates the ways of the wicked.
10 The Lord
reigns forever,
your God, O
Zion, for all generations.
Praise the
Lord.
