Devotional Life
Forest and Trees
From time past to this moment and to all eternity God’s Word speaks
When you look into God’s Word
Take time to understand the context
Take time to see how it speaks to your moment
View the scriptures as a light
As the path to your future
And see how God’s Word is to make you a light
So you can shine like the stars for all to see
Forest and Trees
If you have been to the Smokey Mountains,
you know what an amazing view is.
From the top of a mountain you can
see towns and cities, forest and rivers.
At the same time you can look only a
few feet from where you stand…
And see unique rocks, plants, and
maybe a wild animal or a butterfly.
This is the way we want
to see God’s Word.
The big picture and the
details right where we stand.
When we look into God’s Word,
we see eternity and the moment.
The Word of God opens our eyes to the world
of humanity and also focuses on our inner soul.
The Word of God speaks to our day and
night as well as the seasons in a year…
The sowing and reaping
principles that never change.
As you and I have devotional time in
God’s Word, we need to take it all in.
Allow God’s Word to touch the
very core of who you are…
But also recognize those words have touched
generations past and generations future.
Those words are not only for you…
But every other person ever to live.
As you study God’s Word keep your bearings.
God’s Word was recorded in a time and
place different than where you are and
yet it still holds the same value to you.
Discover how to travel in
time as you read God’s Word.
Put yourself in the place
and time of the scripture.
This can be done by a search
on your computer or phone.
Search the book you are reading.
Look for the date, the location,
events taking place at that time.
All of this can be done so quickly
today, thanks to technology.
This helps you get the big
picture, the forest view.
For the details, the moment and space
where you are praying is the best start.
Invite Jesus to speak to your heart.
To show you the practical things
you need to be successful today.
God’s Word is eternal.
Heaven and earth will pass away,
but my words will never pass away.
Matthew 24:34-35
God’s Word gives light
The unfolding of your words gives light;
it gives understanding to the simple.
Psalms 119:130
Light to your path
Your word is a lamp to my feet
and a light for my path.
Psalms 119:105
Amazingly God’s Word is a light to your feet…
The place where you are.
God’s Word is a lamp to your path…
The journey you are on.
God’s Word makes you
like the shining of a star.
Do everything without complaining or arguing,
so that you may become blameless and pure,
children of God without fault in a crooked
and depraved generation,
in which you shine like stars in the universe
as you hold out the word of life
Philippians 2:14-16
God’s Word sets you above the world…
Makes you shine like a star to the universe.
God’s Word is illuminating
As you study God’s Word…
Remember you need light for the moment,
light for the journey and you
are to give light to the universe.
So make sure you study God’s Word
for the details and the big picture.
