Knowledge Obtaining Knowledge

Obtaining Knowledge

Without a healthy fear of the Lord

The process of Data to Understanding to
Knowledge than Wisdom will not developed properly

Connectedness to God leads to Understanding
The principles of abundant life

Knowledge is much more then “data”.

Knowledge alone is “useless”.

Knowledge you can’t live “without it”.

Solomon the great wise teacher of teachers
does an amazing job of summarizing the
Book of Proverbs in Chapter 1 verses 1-7.

In verse 4 he says…

“For giving prudence to the simple,
knowledge and discretion to the young.”

This book of Proverbs is for giving…

the “simple”- the silly, foolish

Giving “Prudence” – discretion, subtility

“Knowledge” and “Discretion”
to the young – infants

The knowledge Solomon is talking
about is much more then data.

Knowledge that comes from
proverbs, parables, and riddles.

Knowledge that is more than
facts but principles for life.

Jesus used the same method to teach knowledge…

The disciples came to him and asked,
 "Why do you speak to the people in parables?"
He replied, "You are permitted to
understand the secrets of the Kingdom of Heaven,
but others are not. To those who listen to my teaching,
 more understanding will be given, and they will
have an abundance of knowledge.
But for those who are not listening, even what
little understanding they have will be taken
 away from them. That is why I use these parables,
For they look, but they don't really see.
They hear, but they don't really listen or understand.
Matthew 13:10-13 NLT

At least 15 times in the New Testament we find the words
“He who has ears, let him hear”.

Knowledge is useless by its self.

Verse 4 says…

 “knowledge and discretion to the young”

Knowledge must be accompanied with “discretion” - a plan.

Knowledge is meant to be put to work; a plan of action.

The action plan for knowledge needs wisdom and discipline.

It is important that we realize
knowledge needs to be understood.

Therefore, Solomon speaks like a father, to
a son or his child, in the Book of Proverbs.

He says over and over again,
“Get wisdom, knowledge, understanding and discipline”.

Verse 7 is the key that opens the door…

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge”

There are many reasons why this is true.
But the point is without the fear of the Lord
we will be like those Isaiah wrote about…

"'Be ever hearing, but never understanding;
be ever seeing, but never perceiving.'
Make the heart of this people calloused;
make their ears dull and close their eyes.
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
hear with their ears,
understand with their hearts,
and turn and be healed." Isaiah 6:9-10

Without a healthy fear of the Lord…

The process of Data to understanding to
Knowledge than wisdom will not develop properly.

Connectedness to God leads to Understanding…

The principles of abundant life.

Scripture Reading

Proverbs 1:1-7 NIV

1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

2 for attaining wisdom and discipline;
for understanding words of insight;
3 for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life,
doing what is right and just and fair;
4 for giving prudence to the simple,
knowledge and discretion to the young —
5 let the wise listen and add to their learning,
and let the discerning get guidance —
6 for understanding proverbs and parables,
the sayings and riddles of the wise.

7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
