1 John
Knowing you Have Eternal life
The test of life
The Doctrinal Test: What we believe
The Moral Test: How we live
The Social Test: How we love
Jesus is the standard
to the test
“I am the Way, the Truth and the Life”
The test will not be
given at the Pearly Gates but each day of your life
How did you do today?
Eternal life comes through Jesus Christ.
Jesus when telling us He was going to prepare a place for
the believer and in His Father’s house are many rooms said.
"…I am the Way
and the Truth and the Life.
No one comes to the Father except through me.”
John 14:1-6 NIV
Jesus is life.
If you want life in this world and the world to come,
it is found by being in Christ and Christ being in us.
Robert Law in 1885 entitled his Bible Study of 1 John.
“The Test of Life”
He breaks 1 John into three tests of life.
The Doctrinal Test:
What we believe
The Moral Test: How we
live
The Social Test: How
we love
John concludes in Chapter 5 with…
“I write these things
to you who believe in the name of the Son of God
so that you may know
that you have eternal life.” 1
John 5:13
Just a few verses later John says…
“If anyone sees his
brother commit a sin that does not lead to death,…
There is a sin that
leads to death. … All wrongdoing is sin,
and there is sin that does not lead to death.”
1 John 5:16,17
These verses have been strongly debated for centuries.
I have enjoyed studying the scriptures and listening
to the debates on what is the “sin unto death”.
But after all the research, the best
answer is found in the next verse.
“We know that anyone
born of God does not continue to sin; the one who was
born of God keeps him
safe, and the evil one cannot harm him.” 1 John 5:18
“The wages of sin is
death” both physical and spiritual.
The one “born of God
does not continue to sin”.
Ananias and Sapphira lied and died
and the church did not pray for them.
Saul later named Paul, killed Christians and
called himself the chief of all sinners.
Yet, he found God’s grace and life.
The Corinthian Church was told that many were sick and some
die because they did not discern the body of Christ
correctly.
Sin will take the life out of you and Christ will put life
in you.
The one who does not continue in sin God protects.
The one who continues in sin is not protected from the evil
one.
Let’s make it simple…
Stay as far away from sin as you can.
Take the test.
The Doctrinal Test:
What we believe
Know the Truth
Ignorance will get
you hurt.
The Moral Test: How we
live
Knowledge is not enough live the truth.
The Social Test: How
we love
God is love, therefore, we must love one another.
The test is not taken at the Pearly Gates.
The test is taken every day of our lives.
If you failed the test yesterday, pray for God’s grace.
Then be determined to pass the test today.
Scripture Reading
1 John 5:13-21 NIV
13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of
the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. 14 This is the
confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his
will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us — whatever we ask — we
know that we have what we asked of him.
16 If anyone sees his brother commit a sin that does not
lead to death, he should pray and God will give him life. I refer to those
whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not
saying that he should pray about that. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, and there is
sin that does not lead to death.
18 We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin;
the one who was born of God keeps him safe, and the evil one cannot harm him.
19 We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the
control of the evil one. 20 We know also that the Son of God has come and has
given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him
who is true — even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal
life.
21 Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.
