1 John
Born again
Procreated spiritually
“We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the one who
was born of God keeps him safe, and the evil one cannot harm him. We know that
we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the
evil one. We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us
understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is
true — even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.”
1 John 5:18-20
John uses the word born
eight times in 1 John.
In the first 3 chapters of His Gospel,
John uses the word born
eight times.
Each one of these times John is referring to being born of
God.
The word born gives us the idea of coming out of the womb.
But the Greek word born means to procreate
(of the father, by extension of the mother).
It is the Seed, the DNA, that makes the difference.
Let’s take a look at what John has to say
about being “born procreated
again”.
John 1:10-13
He was in the world,
and though the world was made through him,
the world did not recognize him. He came to
that which was his own,
but his own did not receive him.
God created people in His own image giving them physical
bodies,
but they rejected His
spiritual seed, the evidence of rejection is unbelief.
Yet to all who
received him, to those who believed in his name,
he gave the right to
become children of God—
children born not of natural descent, nor of human
decision or a husband's will, but born of God. NIV
The time of conception happens at the time of belief.
Believing gives the right to become “born of God”.
In John 3, Jesus clearly points out in the story of
the Pharisee Nicodemus that you must be born again.
Being born of a woman does not make you a child of God.
Jesus says to enter God’s Kingdom
you must be born of the spirit.
“I tell you the truth,
no one can enter the kingdom
of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.
Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.”
John 3:5 NIV
In 1 John, we see the DNA of
being born again – procreation…
Does what is right
“If you know that he
is righteous, you know that everyone
who does what is right
has been born of him.” 1
John 2:29 NIV
Cannot go on sinning
“No one who is born of
God will continue to sin,
because God's seed
remains in him; he cannot go on sinning,
because he has been
born of God.” 1 John 3:9 NIV
Must have love
“Everyone who loves
has been born of God and knows God.
Whoever does not love does not know God,
because God is love.” 1 John 4:7-8 NIV
Believes Jesus is the
Christ
Love God and carry
out His commandments
“Everyone who believes
that Jesus is the Christ is born of God,
and everyone who loves
the father loves his child as well.
This is how we know that we love the children
of God: by loving God and
carrying out his
commands. This is love for God: to obey his commands.
And his commands are not burdensome,” 1 John 5:1-3 NIV
Overcomes the world
Faith in God’s Word
is greater than the beliefs of this world
“for everyone born of
God overcomes the world.
This is the victory
that has overcome the world, even our faith.
Who is it that
overcomes the world?
Only he who believes
that Jesus is the Son of God.” 1 John 5:4-5 NIV
Keeps himself safe
Keeps a safe distance
from the world’s temptations
“We know that anyone
born of God does not continue to sin;
the one who was born
of God keeps him safe, and the evil one cannot harm him.
“We know that we are
children of God, and that the whole
world is under the control of the evil one.
“We know also that the Son of God has
come and has given us understanding, so that we may
know him who is true.
And we are in him who
is true — even in his Son Jesus Christ.
He is the true God and eternal life.” 1 John 5:18-20 NIV
Being “born again”
is more than a prayer.
It is a change of LIFE.
Scripture Reading
1 John 5:1-5 NIV
5:1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born
of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. 2 This is
how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out
his commands. 3 This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands
are not burdensome, 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the
victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes
the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
1 John 5:18-21 NIV
18 We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin;
the one who was born of God keeps him safe, and the evil one cannot harm him.
19 We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the
control of the evil one. 20 We know also that the Son of God has come and has
given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him
who is true — even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal
life.
21 Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.
