Watch What You Ask For
The Bible says you have not because you ask not.
Or, when you do ask you ask for your own selfish motives. James 4:3
There are some of us who never ask for anything.
We go with the flow.
We are timid and afraid we might be misunderstood.
We find our own way of getting through life.
Then there are some of us who have no problem
asking for whatever is on our mind.
Asking is a major part of receiving.
How you ask for something makes
all the difference in
the world.
Many people ask to be rich.
Whether they ask God…
Or, the way they live life.
Riches seem to be the answer for their life.
Certainly the need for money puts a lot
of pressure on our lives every day.
Our heavenly Father does not live in poverty.
So why doesn’t God give us the lottery when we ask?
What is God looking for in our request?
Solomon made a request that pleased
God and made him rich.
Solomon asked God for the important things.
The first thing in Solomon’s request is his position.
He saw God gave him responsibility for others.
Something he felt ill equipped to handle.
His request started with recognizing God’s purpose.
Then Solomon made his request…
“Give your servant a
discerning heart to govern
your people and to distinguish between right
and wrong.”
Keys to Solomon’s request…
He sees he is God’s “servant” in need of “discernment”.
God is pleased with His simple request.
A request without all the other personal stuff.
God is so pleased He not only gives him
discernment, but long
life and wealth, as well.
So seek first God’s Kingdom and
everything else will be added to you.
Scripture Reading
Ephesians
1:17-19 NIV
18 I pray
also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know
the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in
the saints,
1 Kings
3:7-15 NIV
7 "Now,
O LORD my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But
I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. 8 Your
servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous
to count or number. 9 So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your
people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern
this great people of yours?"
10 The Lord
was pleased that Solomon had asked for this. 11 So God said to him, "Since
you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have
asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering
justice, 12 I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and
discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will
there ever be. 13 Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for — both
riches and honor — so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings.
14 And if you walk in my ways and obey my statutes and commands as David your
father did, I will give you a long life."
