You Anoint My Head With Oil
God wants to apply on
you and in you, His Spirit
To anoint you
We need fresh
anointing
Like oil in a lamp,
it runs out
Like perfume, it
fades
Medicinal essential
oils, wear off
No wonder the Word of
God tells us to be “filled with the
Spirit”
We need to get close
enough to God each day
So He can apply more
of His Spirit on us
Get into His presence
every morning and get refreshed
Be filled with the Spirit. Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and
spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving
thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 5:18-20
You have an anointing,
go and get it from the Good Shepherd
You and I can’t go
anywhere in our cars, bikes and boats
Without oil – Get
your oil
Let’s go somewhere
You Anoint My Head With Oil
When I think of oil I think of crawling
under my truck and removing the drain plug.
You and I can’t go anywhere in
our cars, bikes and boats without oil.
But long before cars and long before
David was a shepherd, oil was used.
It seems oil has
always
been a major need and use.
The use of oil on sheep is still used
today as it was long before David.
Thick oil, like grease, is put on rams’
horns to reduce injury when butting heads.
It was used as medicinal oil, believed
to kill parasites (scab disease) and help
stop the spread of contagious summertime
disease by applying a thick coat on the sheep.
But maybe the use David is thinking
of is for the problem of the bothersome
summertime nose flies.
The shepherd prepares a table for the sheep.
Ever went out to a beautiful place where
the grass was green and the trees in bloom
with the refreshing look of water beside you?
You get out the food and an
uninvited invasion comes to join you…
Flies!
A man brought his pet rabbit to a
friend of mine because the flies got
into its ears and laid their eggs.
Sadly, the fly larva had moved
into its brain and the rabbit died.
The nose fly buzzes around the sheep’s head,
but worse than the
annoyance of their flying
around your head, is when they try to
get into the nose to lay their eggs.
This is a serious problem which shepherds
use a mixture of olive oil and strongly scented
medicinal essential oils to help keep the flies away.
On a more pleasant side…
Oil was mixed with spices
to give it
a nice fragrance and used as a perfume.
We can see this back in the
time of Moses. Exodus 25:6
Oils were put on people and items
to make them special.
The application of oil is called Anointing.
Among the more than 200 times that oil
is mentioned in the Bible…
The connection as a metaphor
of the Holy Spirit’s presence
and action is clear in the ritual of
anointing prophets, priests, and kings.
John tells us we have
an anointing as believers…
I am writing these
things to you about
those who are trying
to lead you astray.
As for you, the
anointing you received
from him remains in
you,
and you do not need
anyone to teach you.
But as his anointing
teaches you about
all things and as that
anointing is real,
not counterfeit —
just as it has taught
you, remain in him.
1 John
2:26-27
But you have an
anointing from the Holy One,
and all of you know
the truth.
1 John 2:20
Jesus is our example of how
the anointing works in us…
…God anointed Jesus of
Nazareth
with the Holy Spirit
and power,
and how he went around doing good and
healing all who were
under the power of the devil,
because God was with
him.
Acts 10:37-38
Oil is used on us to bring healing,
protect us, and make us smell good.
Oil is used in our diet.
Oil is very important,
but it must be
applied.
God wants to apply on
you and in you, His Spirit.
To anoint you…
We need fresh anointing.
Like oil in a lamp,
it runs out.
Like perfume,
it fades.
Medicinal essential oils,
wear off.
No wonder the Word of God tells
us to be “filled with
the Spirit”.
We need to get close enough
to God each day…
So He can apply more
of His Spirit on us.
Get into His presence every
morning and get refreshed.
Be filled with the
Spirit.
Speak to one another
with psalms,
hymns and spiritual
songs.
Sing and make music in
your heart to the Lord,
always giving thanks
to God the Father for everything,
in the name of our
Lord Jesus Christ.

Scripture Reading
Psalms 23:1-24:1 NIV
23:1 A psalm of David.
The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
for his name's sake.
4 Even though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD
forever.
