Triumph Over Giants
Giants…
There are lots of stories and studies about giants
which I have not found too profitable to study.
But giants were a problem for God’s people.
When Moses was taking the children of God to
the Promise Land, spies were sent out to investigate.
Twelve men went into the land and when they returned
they gave a report that everything in the land was giant.
Giant clusters of grapes and giant people.
Although Joshua and Caleb were confident
they could take the land God was giving them,
the other ten men spread fear in the people.
They said, "The
land we explored devours those living in it.
All the people we saw
there are of great size.
We saw the Nephilim
there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim).
We seemed like
grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them."
Numbers 13:32-33 NIV
So Israel spent 40 years in the wilderness
instead of the land of promise for fear of giants.
At the time of David, giants were still in the land
and the Israelites were still afraid of them.
The faith and confidence David had
in God’s ability changed everything.
Why was David to be
admired for his courage
when he was running for his life from Saul.
When he was distressed, had no money
and disconnected while living in a cave.
400 men with the same problems came to him.
400 men with the same problems came to him.
Why? I think it was
the story of his faith to kill a giant.
David became their leader and we
read that his Mighty Men killed giants.
Giants that were keeping the people
of God from their possessions.
I have a hard time believing in Sasquatch.
But I do believe we have giants
keeping us from the promises of God.
Those giants keep us in distress, poor and disconnected.
Far from the abundant life God promises us.
We need to be careful that we do not read
the scriptures to make us feel good where we are.
The scriptures were given to inspire.
Inspire us to be more than conquerors.
Romans 8:31-39
“If
God is for us, who can be against us?”
…”in
all these things we are more than
conquerors
through him who loved us.”
Philippians 4:13
“I
can do everything through him who gives me strength.”
When you feel like the whole world is coming against you…
“IT IS”… That is a big GIANT but….
1 John 5:4-5
“everyone born of God
overcomes the world.
This is the victory
that has overcome the world, even our faith.
5 Who is it that
overcomes the world?
Only he who believes
that Jesus is the Son of God.”
Look at the promises to the overcomer.
Revelation 2:7
To him who overcomes,
I will give the right
to eat from the tree of life,
which is in the
paradise of God.
Revelation 2:11
He who overcomes will
not be
hurt at all by the
second death.
Revelation 2:17
To him who overcomes,
I will give some of
the hidden manna.
I will also give him a
white stone
with a new name
written on it,
known only to him who
receives it.
Revelation 2:26
To him who overcomes
and does my will to the end,
I will give authority
over the nations—
Revelation 3:5-6
He who overcomes will,
like them, be dressed in white.
I will never blot out his name from the book
of life,
but will acknowledge
his name before my Father and his angels.
Revelation 3:12-13
Him who overcomes I
will make a pillar in the temple of my God.
Never again will he
leave it. I will write on him the name of my God and the name of the city of my
God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I
will also write on him my new name.
Revelation 21:7-8
He who overcomes will
inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son.

Scripture Reading
2 Samuel 21:15-22
15 Once again there was a battle between the Philistines and
Israel. David went down with his men to fight against the Philistines, and he
became exhausted. 16 And Ishbi-Benob, one of the descendants of Rapha, whose
bronze spearhead weighed three hundred shekels and who was armed with a new
[sword], said he would kill David. 17 But Abishai son of Zeruiah came to
David's rescue; he struck the Philistine down and killed him. Then David's men
swore to him, saying, "Never again will you go out with us to battle, so
that the lamp of Israel will not be extinguished."
18 In the course of time, there was another battle with the
Philistines, at Gob. At that time Sibbecai the Hushathite killed Saph, one of
the descendants of Rapha.
19 In another battle with the Philistines at Gob, Elhanan
son of Jaare-Oregim the Bethlehemite killed Goliath the Gittite, who had a
spear with a shaft like a weaver's rod.
20 In still another battle, which took place at Gath, there
was a huge man with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot —
twenty-four in all. He also was descended from Rapha. 21 When he taunted
Israel, Jonathan son of Shimeah, David's brother, killed him.
22 These four were descendants of Rapha in Gath, and they
fell at the hands of David and his men.
1 Chronicles 20:4-8
4 In the course of time, war broke out with the Philistines,
at Gezer. At that time Sibbecai the Hushathite killed Sippai, one of the
descendants of the Rephaites, and the Philistines were subjugated.
5 In another battle with the Philistines, Elhanan son of
Jair killed Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, who had a spear with a
shaft like a weaver's rod.
6 In still another battle, which took place at Gath, there
was a huge man with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot —
twenty-four in all. He also was descended from Rapha. 7 When he taunted Israel,
Jonathan son of Shimea, David's brother, killed him.
8 These were descendants of Rapha in Gath,
and they fell at the hands of David and his men.
