Jesus’ Words in Red How We Got the Red Letter Bible

Jesus’ Words in Red
How We Got the Red Letter Bible

I took for granted the Red letter Bible for years
Never thought about why or how we got it
The great story of Dr. Louis Klopsch
God help us not to take for granted
The covenant you gave to us through your blood
The greatest story written in RED

How We Got the Red Letter Bible

When I was a boy, my first
Bible was a red letter Bible.

I loved the idea that I could
quickly see what Jesus had spoken.

I never realized how my Savior’s words
became red until now in my 60’s.

Louis Klopsch was born on
March 7, 1852, in Germany.

The next year his mother died.

The year after that, 1854, Louis’s father
Osmar Klopsch MD, brought him to the U.S.

About 1889, he became the owner-editor of the
American edition of the Christian Herald Magazine.

On June 19, 1899, the now Dr. Louis Klopsch
was writing the editorial for the Christian Herald
when his eyes fell upon Luke 22:20 and the words…

“This cup is the new covenant in my blood,
which is poured out for you.”

Dr. Louis  Klopsch realized that these were the words
of our Savor when He instituted the Lord’s Supper.

Reasoning that all blood is red he asked himself…

“Why not a red letter Bible with the
red words to be those of our Lord?”

Being encouraged by his pastor
and seeking out Bible scholars,
 Louis ran an advertisement November,
1901, offering a red letter Bible.

The first printing was sixty thousand
copies printed on Dr. Louis’ own presses.

These copies quickly sold out and the demand
kept the presses running day and night.

The King of Sweden send Louis a
congratulatory cablegram.

President Theodore Roosevelt invited him to
dine at the White House with him.

Dr. Louis Kopsch died March 28, 1910, and was
buried at Mont Lawn near Tonawanda, New York,
where he had established an orphanage.

The New York Tribune said…

“He will not be easily replaced.
He lived and died by his motto:

Do All the Good You Can for the People you Can

This he truly did”

“This cup is the new covenant in my blood,
which is poured out for you.”

Dr. Louis Kopsch was inspired
by the love of the Savior.

Love that caused Jesus to lay down His life.

To give us a new covenant
written in His own blood.

While the blood flowed through His veins His
words and actions taught us about the new covenant.

When Christ died on the cross, His life
blood was poured out for you and I.

Thank you Dr. Louis Kopsch for
high lighting the Lord’s Words in red
so that they stand out as they should to us.

Scripture Reading

Luke 22:20-21 NIV
