Mighty Men From the Cave to the Forest to Victory

Mighty Men
From the Cave to the Forest to Victory

Hiding in a cave of trouble?
Your complaining echoing off the walls
Are you ready to get out?
The problems did not change when David and his men changed location
But the attitude did
They went to a special place in Judah
The forest of Hereth, a place of dense shrubbery, trees and thorns
It was here David’s men had a change of mind
The thoughts turn from the problems of life to the solutions
Courage was developed to take on the problems
To believe God

From the Cave to the Forest to Victory

David was at a low time in his life.

 He was on the run.

Saul was seeking to kill him.

David fled to a cave.

“All those who were in distress or in debt or discontented gathered around him, and he became their leader. About four hundred men were with him.”
1 Samuel 22:2

Everybody has problems.

Some find comfort in realizing their
problems are not as big as someone else’s.

Some find comfort talking to
those who will show sympathy.

Some enjoy using their problems
to show how bad others are.

Some choose to just ignore the problems.

Problems - we all have them…

Little Ones and Big Ones.

“In this world you will have trouble”

A cave is a place of venting and hiding.

It is a place where you are in
the dark unable to see the light.

David and his men did not stay in the dark cave.

The prophet said go to the land of Judah.

Judah was defined as praise.

In the cave was lamenting and all
the songs were in a minor key.

But in Judah all the songs were in a major key…

Praise and thanksgiving

Songs of hope

The problems did not change when
David and his men changed location.

But the attitude did.

They went to a special place in Judah.

The forest of Hereth, a place of
dense shrubbery, trees and thorns.

It was here David’s men had a change of mind.

The thoughts turn from the problems
of life to the solutions.

Courage was developed to take on the problems.

To believe God.

David, I am sure, equipped his men with
the stories of victory in his own life.

Victories because God was with him;

Lion’s, Bears, and Giants bigger than himself.

This is why these men sought out David.

Not because he had problems,
 but because he had victories.

I can just image the emotional energy
these men got as David played his harp.

As the men sang songs to the Lord…

Complaining turned to praising…

And praising turned to faith…

And faith turned to strength
to become Mighty Men.

Where are you at?

 The cave of complaining?

The forest of praise?

Full of faith taking on giants
and overwhelming odds?

Scripture Reading

1 Samuel 22:1-5 NIV

22:1 David left Gath and escaped to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and his father's household heard about it, they went down to him there. 2 All those who were in distress or in debt or discontented gathered around him, and he became their leader. About four hundred men were with him.

3 From there David went to Mizpah in Moab and said to the king of Moab, "Would you let my father and mother come and stay with you until I learn what God will do for me?" 4 So he left them with the king of Moab, and they stayed with him as long as David was in the stronghold.

5 But the prophet Gad said to David, "Do not stay in the stronghold. Go into the land of Judah." So David left and went to the forest of Hereth.
