Jesus’ Words in Red In the Beginning Was the Word

Jesus’ Words in Red
In the Beginning Was the Word

Words shape us, the way we think and act
With this being true
We should give very special attention to the Words of Jesus
The Apostle John defines Jesus as the “WORD”

In the Beginning Was the Word

God has been defined as many things.

Throughout the Scriptures we find
the Old Testament names given to God…

·        El Shaddai (Lord God Almighty)
·        El Elyon (The Most High God)
·        Adonai (Lord, Master)
·        Yahweh (Lord, Jehovah)
·        Jehovah Nissi (The Lord My Banner)
·        Jehovah-Raah (The Lord My Shepherd)
·        Jehovah Rapha (The Lord That Heals)
·        Jehovah Shammah (The Lord Is There)
·        Jehovah Tsidkenu (The Lord Our Righteousness)
·        Jehovah Mekoddishkem (The Lord Who Sanctifies You)
·        El Olam (The Everlasting God)
·        Elohim (God)
·        Qanna (Jealous)
·        Jehovah Jireh (The Lord Will Provide)
·        Jehovah Shalom (The Lord Is Peace)
·        Jehovah Sabaoth (The Lord of Hosts)

In the New Testament, God
has been defined as Father, Love.

Jesus, the Son of God is defined as…

Messiah, Immanuel, King of the Jews,
Savior, Holy One, Lamb of God, Door,
Way, Truth, Life, Alpha and Omega

The Holy Spirit defined as…

 Advocate, Counselor, Truth, and Comforter

This small sample list helps to define God,
God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

The Apostle John, when writing the
Gospel of John, started with defining Jesus.

John wanted his readers to understand
who the central figure of History is…

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.
Through him all things were made; without him nothing
was made that has been made.
In him was life, and that life was the light of men.
The light shines in the darkness,
but the darkness has not understood it.
John 1:1-5 NIV

John could have used many other metaphors
but none more clear, elegant, powerful or true as…

 “The Word”

In Matthew 8, we see an event in Jesus’ life,
an encounter with a Roman soldier who
was concerned for the health of his servant.

The Centurion Soldier said to Jesus…

“Only say the word, and my servant will be healed”
Matthew 8:8

Matthew 8: 10 says…

And Jesus was “Astonished”, “Amazed”

Jesus’ surprise is that this man
understood the power of a “Word”.

Words have the mysterious and undeniable
power to shape the way we think.

Words shape individuals, communities and the World.

Your life and mine are shaped
by the words we hear and speak.

John says… “In the Beginning was the Word”

Isn’t it interesting in the Book of Genesis
the very first words recorded of God are…

“Let there be light”

John is saying that Jesus is the “Word”
that brought light to the created world and
He is the light to the life of people.

Jesus is the “WORD” - His life and speech
were carefully and strategically arraigned
so we might have light to see how to live.

The fact that God loved the World,
you and I so much that He sent His Son,
demands a response of gratitude and love.

You and I will do well if we give
special attention to the Words of Jesus.

The red letter words.

It is true that all Jesus did and said could
not be contained in the accounts of our Bible.

But what is recorded is powerful to
guide us into the abundant life…

That Jesus said He came to give us.

Jesus is the Word and we would be wise
to give special attention to the red letter
words of Jesus found in the Bible.

Scripture Reading

John 1:1-5 AMP
1:1 IN THE beginning [before all time] was the Word ( Christ),
and the Word was with God, and the Word was God Himself. [Isa 9:6.]

2 He was present originally with God.

3 All things were made and came into existence through Him; and without Him was not even one thing made that has come into being.

4 In Him was Life, and the Life was the Light of men.

5 And the Light shines on in the darkness, for the darkness has never overpowered it [put it out or absorbed it or appropriated it, and is unreceptive to it].

Genesis 1:1-5 NIV
1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

3 And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning — the first day.
