Mighty Men
More Than a Sorry Heart a Heart of Repentance
Why was David chosen by God?
'I have found David son of Jesse a man after my
own heart;
he will do everything I want him to do.' Acts 13:22 NIV
David was a Mighty Man because he knew how to repent
What about us?
Are we just sorry?
Or, have we repented
to do everything God wants us to do?
More Than a Sorry Heart,
a Heart of Repentance
Mighty men are strong men.
Mighty men are confident men.
But Mighty Men must also be humble men.
Men who can be broken and molded.
David became a strong and powerful man.
As a youth, it was clear to see total reliance on the Lord.
But as he got older his kingdom, his
wealth and power got established.
As David entered his 50’s, he
enjoyed the fruit of his labor.
He came to a place where he
could have others do his work.
David no longer went out to battle, but stayed
at home in the comfort of his years of labor.
Yet, he was not satisfied and he used his power
and authority to take what was not to be his.
God sent Nathan, the prophet, to show
David how wicked he had been.
David got the message.
In 2 Samuel 12:13 we
read…
“Then David said to
Nathan,
"I have sinned
against the LORD."
Now many have been caught in their sin?
Many have been sorry they got caught,
even sorry for the painful consequences
of their wrong doing.
But the verdict and the punishment is not enough.
The scriptures tell us it is not
God’s will that any should perish.
God does not delight in inflicting pain,
even death, the ultimate wage for sin.
Pain and suffering has its place.
Its purpose is to bring sorrow that makes us sorry.
Look at 2 Corinthians
7:10-11…
Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads
to salvation and
leaves no regret,
but worldly sorrow
brings death.
See what this godly
sorrow has produced in you:…
David was a Mighty Man because of
“what godly sorry
produced” in him.
Godly sorry produces change of heart and actions.
There is fruit of repentance.
Repentance produces life change.
David wrote Psalms 51.
It is his record
after committing
adultery with Bathsheba.
David cried out for mercy.
He recognized He had sinned against the Lord.
The Lord who sees everything, even the motives
in the heart and the thoughts in the mind.
David knows his only hope is for a God change.
He realized he cannot clean up his life.
Only God can clean him.
David said…
Create in me a pure
heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast
spirit within me.
Do not cast me from
your presence
or take your Holy
Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy
of your salvation
and grant me a willing
spirit, to sustain me.
David knew he had to yield
to God cleaning his heart.
He could not change without
the power of the Holy Spirit.
David also knew that the only true joy in life
is in Salvation, the place of God’s deliverance.
The key is this…
“Grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.”
It is not the sacrifices that God is looking for.
It is the pure heart and willing
spirit to do all God asks us to do.
Why was David chosen by God?
'I have found David
son of Jesse a man after my own heart;
he will do everything
I want him to do.'
Acts 13:22

Scripture Reading
NIV
2 Samuel 11:2-5
2 One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on
the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was
very beautiful, 3 and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said,
"Isn't this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the
Hittite?" 4 Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to him, and he
slept with her. (She had purified herself from her uncleanness.) Then she went
back home. 5 The woman conceived and sent word to David, saying, "I am pregnant."
2 Samuel 11:26
26 When Uriah's wife heard that her husband was dead, she
mourned for him. 27 After the time of mourning was over, David had her brought
to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing David
had done displeased the LORD.
2 Samuel 12:13
13 Then David said to Nathan,
"I have sinned against the LORD."
Psalm 51
51:1 For the director of music. A psalm of David.
When the prophet Nathan came to him after David
had committed adultery with Bathsheba.
Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion
blot out my transgressions.
2 Wash away all my iniquity
and cleanse me from my sin.
3 For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is always before me.
4 Against you, you only, have I sinned
and done what is evil in your sight,
so that you are proved right when you speak
and justified when you judge.
5 Surely I was sinful at birth,
sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
6 Surely you desire truth in the inner parts;
you teach me wisdom in the inmost place.
7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean;
wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
8 Let me hear joy and gladness;
let the bones you have crushed rejoice.
9 Hide your face from my sins
and blot out all my iniquity.
10 Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11 Do not cast me from your presence
or take your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation
and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
and sinners will turn back to you.
14 Save me from bloodguilt, O God,
the God who saves me,
and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.
15 O Lord, open my lips,
and my mouth will declare your praise.
16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;
you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart,
O God, you will not despise.
18 In your good pleasure make Zion prosper;
build up the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then there will be righteous sacrifices,
whole burnt offerings to delight you;
then bulls will be offered on your altar.
