Mighty Men
Strength From the Uncommon WORD
When David fled
from Saul
He stopped at
the house of the Lord
He asked for
two items
Some bread; he
did not get common bread, but Holy Bread
He asked for a
sword; he did not get a common sword
He got the sword
too big to handle,
The Sword of
Goliath
When you feel
like running and hiding in a cave
You too need
the uncommon Bread and Sword
You need the Word
of the Lord
Strength From the Uncommon WORD
David had fled and was hiding from Saul.
David, full of faith in God and loyalty to King Saul,
was not rewarded for his faithfulness.
His life had become a life on the run
with nothing, not
even a sword.
The first place he went to was the priest
where he asked for
food and a sword.
The bread was Holy Bread,
not the common bread.
The sword was Goliath’s Sword,
too big to handle.
When you and I are overwhelmed with life and
we find ourselves on the run,
we are given the same Holy Bread.
It is not the common
words,
it is the Words of God.
The scriptures you read every day
of your life come alive and give you
understanding and strength like never before.
Though you walk by faith and it seems
everything has failed…
The Bread of God, God’s
Word,
gives you a renewed energy.
His Word opens your eyes even
though you are hiding in a dark cave.
You don’t need the light of day because God is with
you and each word brings comfort and security.
Like David, God gives us a Sword too big to handle.
It is a Sword that brings fear to our enemies but
our strength to handle it last only for a short time.
The Sword, or the Word of the Lord,
God gives to us is not a comfortable sword.
It takes a lot of our energy because
God’s ways are not our ways.
But trusting in what God gives
us will bring down our enemies.
Remember this was Goliath’s Sword.
When David was younger God
equipped him with a slingshot.
After he had conquered his enemy, God had
given him the weapon that worked against him.
Next time you feel like you need to run to a cave
and hide, go to the House of the Lord.
Get the Word of the Lord.
It will nourish you like Holy Bread.
It will give you the weapon you need even
though you may feel it is too big to handle.
"It is written:
'Man does not live on bread alone,
but on every word that
comes from the mouth of God.'"
Matthew 4:4
NIV
When you feel like running and hiding in a cave,
you, too, need the uncommon Bread and Sword.
You need the Word of the Lord.
Scripture Reading
1
Samuel 21:1-11 NIV
21:1
David went to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest. Ahimelech trembled when he met him,
and asked, "Why are you alone? Why is no one with you?"
2
David answered Ahimelech the priest, "The king charged me with a certain
matter and said to me, 'No one is to know anything about your mission and your
instructions.' As for my men, I have told them to meet me at a certain place. 3
Now then, what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread, or whatever
you can find."
4
But the priest answered David, "I don't have any ordinary bread on hand;
however, there is some consecrated bread here — provided the men have kept
themselves from women."
5
David replied, "Indeed women have been kept from us, as usual whenever I
set out. The men's things are holy even on missions that are not holy. How much
more so today!" 6 So the priest gave him the consecrated bread, since
there was no bread there except the bread of the Presence that had been removed
from before the LORD and replaced by hot bread on the day it was taken away.
7
Now one of Saul's servants was there that day, detained before the LORD; he was
Doeg the Edomite, Saul's head shepherd.
8
David asked Ahimelech, "Don't you have a spear or a sword here? I haven't
brought my sword or any other weapon, because the king's business was
urgent."
9
The priest replied, "The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you killed
in the Valley of Elah, is here; it is wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If
you want it, take it; there is no sword here but that one."
David
said, "There is none like it; give it to me."
10
That day David fled from Saul and went to Achish king of Gath.
