The
Invitation of Two Women
Which
House Will You Live In?
Two women are inviting you to their house in Proverbs 7-9
The House of the Wayward Woman leads to deeper death
The House of Lady Wisdom leads to greater life
The simple eat in the house of death
While those who leave their simple ways
Eat from the table of Wisdom and live
The
Invitation of Two Women
Which
House Will You Live In?
Proverbs 7-9 is about the house of an adulteress or
a wayward woman verses the House of Wisdom.
Remember in the beginning God said…
It is not good that man should be alone.
Man needs a female helpmate.
If you only read verses 14-18 of Chapter 7,
you would
find the woman of a man’s dreams.
In verse 14 she appears to be very spiritual.
Verse 15 she is looking for the man
and she reveals her desire for him, she
makes him feel very special, he is honored.
Verse 16 you get a picture of this woman who knows
how to
decorate and make herself and her house look beautiful
and fresh.
Her bedroom is the most beautiful room in the
house and its aroma is intoxicated with pleasure.
She knows just what a man wants to hear…
“Come, let’s drink deeply of love till
morning;
let’s
enjoy ourselves with love!”
The problem is this woman has crafty intent,
her kiss and the outward picture of the perfect
dream is a trap, a house that leads to destruction…
Her house is a highway to the grave,
leading down to the chambers of death.
Proverbs
7:27
The woman in Chapter 8 is called Wisdom…
Say
to wisdom, “You are my sister,”
and
to insight, “You are my relative.”
They
will keep you from the adulterous woman,
from
the wayward woman with her seductive words.
Lady Wisdom’s background is given in Chapter 8.
She was with God from the beginning.
Proverbs 8: 22 speaking of Wisdom says…
The
LORD possessed me in the beginning
of
his way, before his works of old. KJV
The word “possessed”
could also be translated “created”.
The Woman Wisdom was by the Lord’s side and
together they created the heavens and the earth.
Wisdom is a very vocal woman at every place
in life and to every person alive she speaks.
She opens her mouth with trustworthy things to
say that which is Right, True, and Just.
Wisdom is the power to lead and rule…
“I, wisdom, dwell together with prudence;
I possess knowledge and discretion.
To fear the LORD is to hate evil;
I hate pride and arrogance,
evil behavior and perverse speech.
Counsel and sound judgment are mine;
I have insight, I have power.
Proverbs 8:12-14
She does not walk with the wrong crowd.
I love those who love me,
and those who seek me
find me.
Proverbs
8:17
She is confident
I walk in the way of righteousness,
along the paths of justice
Chapter 9
sums up the contrast.
Wisdom has
built her house and so
has the
unruly woman. (verse 1 &14)
Both women
stand at the highest point of the city
and call
out to the simple. (verses 3ff & 14ff)
Both women
offer a meal but the
food is
very different. (verse 4 & 17)
In the House
of Wisdom you
must leave
your simple ways.
In the
house of the unruly, the simple ways
lead the
guests into deep realms of death.
But the House
of Wisdom
leads to
deeper life. (verse 6 & 18)
Scripture Reading
Wisdom has
built her house;
she has
set up its seven pillars.
2 She
has prepared her meat and mixed her wine;
she has
also set her table.
3 She
has sent out her servants, and she calls
from the
highest point of the city,
4 “Let
all who are simple come to my house!”
To those
who have no sense she says,
5 “Come,
eat my food
and drink
the wine I have mixed.
6 Leave
your simple ways and you will live;
walk in
the way of insight.”
7 Whoever
corrects a mocker invites insults;
whoever
rebukes the wicked incurs abuse.
8 Do
not rebuke mockers or they will hate you;
rebuke the
wise and they will love you.
9 Instruct
the wise and they will be wiser still;
teach the
righteous and they will add to their learning.
10 The
fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,
and
knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
11 For
through wisdom your days will be many,
and years
will be added to your life.
12 If
you are wise, your wisdom will reward you;
if you are
a mocker, you alone will suffer.
13 Folly
is an unruly woman;
she is
simple and knows nothing.
14 She
sits at the door of her house,
on a seat
at the highest point of the city,
15 calling
out to those who pass by,
who go
straight on their way,
16 “Let
all who are simple come to my house!”
To those
who have no sense she says,
17 “Stolen
water is sweet;
food eaten
in secret is delicious!”
18 But
little do they know that the dead are there,
that her
guests are deep in the realm of the dead.
