Being
Successful
Correction and Instruction are the Way
to Life
Correction and Instruction are the way
to life
Proverbs 6:23
“The way to life” or it could be read “The
way of life”
Life is like a pencil…
One end we
are writing information in our minds and heart
and with the other end of the pencil we are erasing
our mistakes
When I was in school my eraser never lasted as long
as the pencil
So my mother
would buy me the big erasers
The way to life is a path of mistakes and
the way of life is one mistake after another
I think many of us grow up with a fear of making a
mistake
We fear “Correction”
Correction and Instruction are the Way
to Life
Correction
can be embarrassing.
Correction comes when we don’t read the
instructions,
we don’t understand the instructions, or
we think the instructions are not important.
Correction comes whenever there
is a better way of doing something.
Remember when you first learned to write cursive.
You had examples, those examples of
each letter were smooth and graceful.
For some of us it took many attempts to make
a letter that could be recognized as a letter.
If you are a Doctor, chances are you still
can’t write cursive letters others can recognize.
Everything we
do in life can be done
better, smoother and more graceful.
Therefore
correction and learning
are a valuable part of everyday life.
God understands our imperfections and
understands that we will need grace and
mercy in order to make corrections.
Grace is favor; knowing that you are
loved makes correction much easier.
Mercy is not receiving punishment we
deserve so we can try again to get it right.
When I was in school I used my left hand or
a piece of paper to cover my writing so no
one could see my writing and misspelled words.
I did not want correction because it was embarrassing.
I wanted to be seen as perfect so
I covered up my imperfections.
This only kept me from being more perfect.
We also hide our imperfections for
fear others will think less of us.
Sadly some will, but Christ’s way is if we see a
brother or sister is missing
the mark (sin) we should restore that person in a
spirit of gentleness.
Galatians 6:1
Everything you and I do in life can be done
better; there is always room for improvement.
So we need to have a spirit that
welcomes correction and instruction.
For some of us we reject correction and instruction.
When we reject correction and instruction it
becomes rebellion and that can never be tolerated.
Proverbs 10:17
1 Samuel 15:23 tells us rebellion and
arrogance are not correctable and bring rejection.
All of us are responsible for helping others.
We are to give correction and instruction
and this too needs to be perfected.
The Bible warns fathers not to push their children
to rebellion.
No one wants to receive correction or
instruction that is not full of grace and mercy…
Full of love and a strong desire to see others
successful and get all God has for them.
No matter how old and wise you get every day
of your life there will be a need for correction
and instruction and a need to give it.
So learn how to handle correction and instruction.
Your inner peace depends on it.
Proverbs 6:23 also says the command (mitzvah)
is a lamp,
and teaching (towrah) is a light.
Life is full of correction and instruction.
The light to life comes from commands and teachings.
The more time you spend in God’s Word applying His
commands and teachings to your life, the less
correction and instruction you will receive from
others.
Be a person who can receive and
give correction and instruction.
Scripture
Reading
Proverbs 6:20-23
My son, keep your father’s command
and do not forsake your mother’s
teaching.
21 Bind them always on your heart;
fasten them around your neck.
22 When you walk, they will guide you;
when you sleep, they will watch over
you;
when you awake, they will speak to you.
23 For this command is a lamp,
this teaching is a light,
and correction and instruction
are the way to life
