Do Not Forget the
Lord Your God
Because forgetting is a “BIG PROBLEM”.
Let us remind ourselves of who
God is and what He has done.
Let us remind our families and others…
“Do not forget the Lord”.
Forgetting is one of my greatest fears.
It may be forgetting something I wanted to
pick up at the store or a plan in my day.
I fear forgetting the good memories or how to
do something so the next time life will be easier.
do something so the next time life will be easier.
I seem to always have a lot on my mind
and things get lost along the way.
All this forgetting gives me a fear of Alzheimer’s.
I know people who never can remember
where they placed their car keys.
And even worse can’t remember
where they parked their car.
Forgetting can be a big problem.
There are things we forget as soon as we hear them.
Sometimes that happens to me when Sandy tells
me something and my mind is on something else.
There are things we also forget as time goes by.
Forgetting is a BIG PROBLEM.
Moses knew forgetting was a big problem.
He could see that despite the miraculous
things God had done to set the Israelites
free from slavery he needed to warn them…
“Be careful that you
do not forget the Lord,
who brought you out of
Egypt, out of the land of slavery.”
Moses says… “Do not
forget the Lord”;
when you come into the land and things are good.
We always seem to pray more,
our spiritual sensitivity is heightened
when we are going through hard times.
As things turn good in our lives we begin
to take them for granted and our level of
gratefulness and thanksgiving diminishes.
Moses says… “Do not forget the Lord”;
when you are around those who don’t follow God.
The law and the commandments of God
were given to help us live prosperous lives.
Sometimes God’s commandments don’t seem
to be important when we see others doing
well and they have no knowledge of God.
Moses says…
“Do not follow other
gods, the gods of the peoples around you”.
People don’t have to have a religion to have other gods.
Putting anything above God in our lives is another god.
As we hang around others who do not
acknowledge God they
put everything
before God and make it look so harmless.
Moses says… “Do not
forget the Lord”;
in the future.
It is so important to tell the future generations
of God’s provisions and His ways.
History tells us that children and grand-
children drift away from the truth and
righteousness of the earlier generations.
It is our duty to tell our children and
grandchild what God has done.
“The Lord commanded us
to obey all these decrees and to fear the Lord our God,
so that we might always
prosper and be kept alive, as is the case today.
And if we are careful
to obey all this law before the Lord our God,
as he has commanded
us, that will be our righteousness."
Our children can have the same prosperity if they obey God.
They, too, can receive the rewards of righteousness.
Because forgetting is a “BIG PROBLEM”.
Let us remind ourselves of who
God is and what He has done.
Let us remind our families and others…
“Do not forget the Lord”.
Scripture Reading
Deuteronomy 6:10-25
10 When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore
to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you — a land with large,
flourishing cities you did not build, 11 houses filled with all kinds of good
things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive
groves you did not plant — then when you eat and are satisfied, 12 be careful
that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of
slavery.
13 Fear the Lord your God, serve him only and take your
oaths in his name. 14 Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around
you; 15 for the Lord your God, who is among you, is a jealous God and his anger
will burn against you, and he will destroy you from the face of the land. 16 Do
not test the Lord your God as you did at Massah. 17 Be sure to keep the
commands of the Lord your God and the stipulations and decrees he has given
you. 18 Do what is right and good in the Lord's sight, so that it may go well
with you and you may go in and take over the good land that the Lord promised
on oath to your forefathers, 19 thrusting out all your enemies before you, as
the Lord said.
20 In the future, when your son asks you, "What is the
meaning of the stipulations, decrees and laws the Lord our God has commanded
you?" 21 tell him: "We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the Lord
brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 22 Before our eyes the Lord sent
miraculous signs and wonders — great and terrible — upon Egypt and Pharaoh and
his whole household. 23 But he brought us out from there to bring us in and
give us the land that he promised on oath to our forefathers. 24 The Lord
commanded us to obey all these decrees and to fear the Lord our God, so that we
might always prosper and be kept alive, as is the case today. And if we are
careful to obey all this law before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us,
that will be our righteousness."
