The
Blessing
By William M. Self, Sr.
Was this meant to be a cure or
Is it to be a blessing
Remember someday the younger will be the older
Serve the youth
Help them become all
God has for them
The Elder Shall Serve the Younger
There seems to be a pattern where
the Bible puts the
younger first.
Consider Jacob and Joseph.
Then there is the Scripture…
“But many who are
first will be last,
and the last
first." Mark 10:31 NKJV
John the Baptist and Jesus were first borns.
About John, Jesus
says…
“Among those born of
women there has not risen anyone
greater than John the
Baptist; yet he who is least in the
kingdom of heaven is
greater than he.” Matthew
11:11 NIV
Jesus tells His disciples…
“The greatest among
you will be your servant.
For whoever exalts
himself will be humbled,
and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”
Matthew
23:11-12 NIV
It seems this pattern of the elder serving the
younger is something
we should consider.
I am a first born.
Growing up, I like many other first born,
would look to care
for the younger ones.
I remember writing a paper for school
as a boy that my mother did not appreciate
me teaching my
siblings wrestling holds.
Being older isn’t about showing
our strength and pride.
Being older carries the responsibility
of helping the younger.
If you are the oldest or just older you
and I are called to serve the younger.
The younger needs our experience.
We, who are older, are the next
generation’s most valuable asset.
I am a leader and I do
not like second place.
But you and I were called to be
servants, servants to the younger.
The blessing is the older
get to serve the younger.
Not to teach them how to do it our way...
But to help them develop
all God has given them.
Don’t wrestle with the youth, serve them.
Scripture Reading
Genesis
25:23 NIV
23 The Lord
said to her,
"Two
nations are in your womb,
and two
peoples from within you will be separated;
one people
will be stronger than the other,
and the
older will serve the younger."
