Insecurity
I Am
I am so glad God said I AM THAT I AM
No title can describe God and no title can describe you
So that I can say I am that I am by the grace of God
If God made me capable of it, I can do it
If chairs need to be set up for a meeting,
I can do it even though I might be the pastor of the church
If there are others to set up the chairs
So I can be in God’s Word to minister to others, I can be free to do that as well
Be in the moment by recognizing God’s work in you
And how you can use that to unify God’s people and His plan
I Am
In my early 20’s I was looking
to find out who I was.
I was involved in starting a church
and knew God had called me.
I had studied Ephesians 4.
Paul writes…
“There is One”
There is one body and one Spirit—
just as you were called to one hope when you were called—
one Lord, one faith, one baptism;
one God and Father of all,
who is over all and through all and in all.
Ephesians 4:3-6
This call to “oneness” played and
still plays a strong roll in my life.
Yet, I saw myself as different.
I knew I was not like everyone else.
There was something special
about the way God made me.
As I read on in the fourth chapter…
I began to wonder what shape
God had made me to be.
Paul said God gave as
gifts to the church people…
It was he who gave some to be apostles,
some to be prophets, some to be evangelists,
and some to be pastors and teachers,
to prepare God's people for works of service,
so that the body of Christ may be built up until
we all reach unity in the faith and
in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature,
attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
Ephesians 4:11-13
I was very insecure about who I was.
All my life up till that time,
I studied people, trying to
discover someone like me.
As I studied Ephesians 4,
I wondered which of
the 5 Gift Ministries I was.
I thought of being an apostle to the world.
I could see some prophetic gifting’s.
I wanted to win souls,
but it didn’t seem to fit.
I remember struggling in
my mind and in prayer.
It seemed there were so many others
who felt confident in who they were,
but I was not sure.
My prayer became more intense
as I questioned God on who
and what He made me to be.
It was like a title would solve
all my issues of insecurity.
I remember God answering my prayers.
But it did not come as I had hoped for,
in a nice neat package.
He took me back in time,
a time when God answered
Moses’ question.
When Moses, who was very insecure
about who he was,
said to God when the children of Israel
asked who was sending him.
And Moses said unto God,
Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel,
and shall say unto them,
The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you;
and they shall say to me,
What is his name? What shall I say unto them?
Exodus 3:13 KJV
God’s answer spoke to me…
And God said unto Moses,
I AM THAT I AM: and he said,
Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel,
I AM hath sent me unto you.
Exodus 3:14 KJV
I could say…
I AM THAT I AM.
I
So, I did not have to worry about a title.
I did not need to have a label.
I could just be who God made me
to be and let that play out in my life.
Years later, many people recognized me
as a pastor and called me pastor.
But as I have a strong pastor’s heart
and loved the role of a pastor…
I realize the title of pastor
does not define all me.
I also see that I pastored
differently than other pastors.
I was and am unique and so are you.
We can get caught up in
titles, brands, and labels…
Comparing ourselves with others
or current expectations of others
and ourselves.
But you are who God made you to be.
There is variety, uniqueness, talents,
personally, experiences, giftings,
and more that make you different…
That God has deposited into
your life to shape who you are.
There is no one else like you.
Because God has shaped you as a unique
specialty tool for the work He wants to do.
I am a ‘DYI Guy’ and I am sure I
have thousands of tools, all different,
so that I can do all things.
When I was younger and could not afford tools…
I used a screwdriver and hammer
for almost everything and frustration,
breaking things, was too often the result.
God does not need another one of you,
if He did, He would not need you.
He never loses a tool and always knows
where you are at when He needs you.
You may feel like you are in the tool box
while other tools are used more often.
But you are what God made you
and with a special purpose.
Remember Ephesians 4…
All giftings do have one purpose.
Although each of us are shaped differently
by God, we all have one purpose…
To bring unity.
We are all to work together
for God’s purpose and plan.
I am so glad God said…
I AM THAT I AM
No title can describe God
and no title can describe you.
So that I can say…
I am that I am by the grace of God.
If God made me capable of it…
I can do it!
If chairs need to be set up for a meeting,
I can do it even though I might
be the pastor of the church.
If there are others to set up the chairs,
so I can be in God’s Word to minister
to others, I can be free to do that as well.
Be in the moment by recognizing God’s
work in you and how you can use that
to unify God’s people and His plan.
