How to Pray
Your Will Be Done
When we come to the
Father in prayer we bring our requests to Him
We do not come to
instruct God but to discover His will, His desire
In the Father’s will
is the best for you
God wants to use you
to bring about His will
So praying is not a
matter of saying, Your will be done
God you will do what you want to do
God you will do what you want to do
No prayer is
discovering God’s will and living it
Your Will Be Done
Ever think about the will of a person?
The will is the faculty of the mind to select.
It is the part of the mind
where desire, pleasure are.
It is the will that makes choices
and determination is set.
Will does not
refer to any particular desire,
but rather to the mechanism for
choosing from among one's desires.
From the time of Adam and Eve,
we have seen God has
given us a free will.
Adam and Eve desired to be wise like God.
Genesis 3:7
The will is not only central to
who we are, but to what we do.
History proves the verse that says…
There is a way that
seems right to a man,
but in the end it
leads to death.
Proverbs 14:12
The will of people is tempted with evil desires.
These desires for pleasure cause
us to make bad discussions.
This is why James says…
When tempted, no one
should say, "God is tempting me." For God cannot be tempted by evil,
nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire,
he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives
birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.
James
1:13-15
Note…
“that God cannot be tempted by evil”
God’s desire, His will, His pleasure is pure.
His thoughts, His ways are above ours.
The scriptures say…
The Lord is not
willing that any should perish,
but that all should
come to repentance.
2 Peter 3:9 KJV
God’s will is that no one would perish.
Yet people do perish.
God provided a way through the
death and resurrection of Jesus.
This way to escape death came
because God so loved the world.
When we pray “Your
will be done”…
We are submitting to God’s pure desire.
These words challenge
us as
we bring our requests to God.
Because sometimes we ask for
things we should not ask for…
What causes fights and
quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you?
You want something but don't get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have
what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask
God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that
you may spend what you get on your pleasures.
James 4:1-3
We see Jesus model this prayer when
He was in the Garden of Gethsemane.
He prayed…
"Abba,
Father," he said, "everything is possible for you.
Take this cup from me.
Yet not what I will, but what you will.
Mark 14:36
He also warned the disciples…
Watch and pray so that
you will not fall into temptation.
The spirit is willing,
but the body is weak"
Mark 14:38
When we come to the Father in prayer
we bring our request to Him.
We do not come to instruct God
but to discover His will, His desire.
In the Father’s will is the best for you.
God wants to use you to bring about His will.
So praying is not a matter of saying
"Your will be done"
"Your will be done"
God you will do what you want to do.
No, prayer is discovering
God’s will and living it.
Scripture Reading
Matthew 6:9-13 NIV
9 "This, then, is how you should pray:
"'Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 Forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.'
