Teach Us to Number Our Days Your Days Are Not Yours

Teach Us to Number Our Days
Your Days Are Not Yours

Who does your day belong to?

Ever say, “I wish I had a day to myself?”

I think there is a part of all of us that says,
I can hardly wait until I can have some time to myself.

We can’t wait until we are old enough to be on our own
so we don’t have to live for our parents…

We can’t wait until the kids start school…

We can’t wait until we retire…

I know I left out a lot of can’t waits…

Like days off work, vacations and more…

We spend a lot of time looking forward to having – “me days.”

I have read Romans 12:5 more times than I can remember,
but when I read it last night, it jumped off the page.

“Each member belongs to all the others.”

It is ok that I belong to Christ.
1 Corinthians 6:20

But the Bible doesn’t stop there.

If we are married, the husband and wife belong to each other.
1 Corinthians 7:3

Paul said he was free but made himself a servant to all.
Galatians 9:19

Now we find in Romans 12:5,
we belong to all the other believers.

I think it is clear that the number of days that are ours
are to be less than the number of days
we give to God and others.

I confess I married Sandy because I wanted her love.

I realized I had a great need to be loved.

But as we grew in our relationship,
I realized I had a greater need
to love than to be loved.

This one truth has made every day I give away - to be my day.

The reward I feel when I bless someone
satisfies even when that person cannot return the favor.

Maybe that is why Jesus says,
Give and it shall be given to you
in unbelievable measure from other people.
Luke 6:36

So I guess it is alright that my days do not belong to me,
but to God and others.

Scripture Reading

Romans 12:3-6 NIV
3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you:
Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought,
but rather think of yourself with sober judgment,
in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you.
4 Just as each of us has one body with many members,
and these members do not all have the same function,
5 so in Christ we who are many form one body,
and each member belongs to all the others.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NIV
19 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit,
who is in you, whom you have received from God?
You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price.
Therefore honor God with your body.

1 Corinthians 7:3-5 NIV
3 The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife,
and likewise the wife to her husband.
4 The wife's body does not belong to her alone but also to her husband.
In the same way, the husband's body does not belong to him alone but also to his wife.
5 Do not deprive each other except by mutual consent and for a time,
so that you may devote yourselves to prayer.
Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you
because of your lack of self-control.

1 Corinthians 9:19 NIV
19 Though I am free and belong to no man,
I make myself a slave to everyone,
to win as many as possible.

Luke 6:38 KJV
38 Give, and it shall be given unto you;
good measure, pressed down, and shaken together,
and running over, shall men give into your bosom.
For with the same measure that ye mete withal
it shall be measured to you again.
