Romans 12 The Meaning of Therefore

Romans 12

The Meaning of Therefore

Description: Therefore… | Calvary Baptist Church Blog

Paul’s first word in Romans 12 is “Therefore”

When you see the word “Therefore” you should stop

And ask the question, “What is it there for?”

All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God Romans 3:23

Because of God’s Righteous Wrath, we need God’s Mercy

“Therefore…in view of God’s Mercy”

We should do the things in Romans 12

Which starts off with personal sacrifice

Death to the control of physical desires

Paul says the same thing in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

Again, we see the “Therefore” honor God with your bodies

What Paul is about to say in Romans 12 we cannot do unless we

… declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord Romans 10:9

Who is Lord?

Who will take control of your life?

The “Therefore” is important

We must not forget the hardship sin has done in our bodies

Sacrifice was necessary on God’s part for our forgiveness

Sacrifice was necessary on our part to live a new life

The Meaning of Therefore

Paul’s first word in Romans 12 is…

 “Therefore”

When you see the word “Therefore”…

You should stop and ask the question…

 “What is it there for?”

There is a reason,

There is a purpose.

There is something that has led up to this point.

A foundation has been laid.

Too often in life we do not understand

the “Why” because we do not take the time

to look for the “Therefore”.

There are a lot of things that don’t make sense

because we don’t know why it is there.

The “Therefore” is the foundation.

Foundations normally are not seen.

For example…

When you drive through a city

you see buildings, but not the foundation.

Yet, without the foundation

 the building would not stand.

That building is there because

there was a reason to build it.

Many times, we don’t understand why people

do what they do because we see

the deed and not the reason behind the deed.

Tim Lahaye said in his book…

 The Act of Marriage

“The key to communication is

to view life through someone else’s eyes.”

Too often we don’t care about the “Why”.

We only care about what we see and think.

We sometimes feel…

The ‘therefores’ in life are not important

because we got a better plan.

You and I, as we look at others

deeds, life and God’s Word...

Should take a moment to ask ourselves…

 What is it therefore?

When we want to know the ‘why’,

the consequences…

When we want the reason for the results…

We have to look for the “Therefore”.

“Therefore” is the process of information.

So, Paul says…

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters,

in view of God’s mercy”

Chapters 1 through 11

reveal the failures of all people.

Remember “All have sin”.

Wrath against Gentiles…

The Wrath of God is on the Gentiles

because they suppress the truth by their wickedness…

and are without excuse

Romans 1:18-20

 Wrath against Jews.

But Israel…

Which followed after the law of righteousness,

hath not attained to the law of righteousness.

Romans 9:31

 because the law brings wrath.

Romans 4:15

For we have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin. 10 As it is written:

“There is no one righteous, not even one

 Romans 3:9

Paul also includes himself as worthy of wrath.

What a wretched man I am!

Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?

Romans 7:24

The Greek noun ὀργή (“wrath”)

appears more frequently in Romans

 (1:18; 2:5 [twice], 8; 3:5; 4:15; 5:9; 9:22 [twice];

12:19; 13:4, 5) than in any other Pauline epistle.

Because of God’s Righteous Wrath

we need God’s Mercy.

“Therefore…in view of God’s Mercy”.

We should do the things in Romans 12.

Which starts off with personal sacrifice.

Death to the control of physical desires.

Paul says the same thing in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20…

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit,

who is in you, whom you have received from God?

You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price.

Therefore honor God with your bodies.

Again, we see the…

“Therefore” honor God with your bodies

What Paul is about to say in Romans 12

 we cannot do unless we…

… declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord

 Romans 10:9

Who is Lord?

Who will take control of your life?

The “Therefore” is important.

 We must not forget…

The hardship sin has done in our bodies.

Sacrifice was necessary on God’s part

 for our forgiveness.

Sacrifice was necessary on our part

to live a new life.

Scripture Reading

Romans 12:1-2

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God – this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.
