Romans 10 Paul Defends His Ministry

Romans 10

Paul Defends His Ministry

Description: Romans 10:9 - Wellspring Christian Ministries

Paul clearly lays out the need for everyone to hear the Good News

Both Jews and Gentiles

The need to preach this message everywhere

As Paul says to the Jews first, but also to the Gentiles

Because Paul cares so much for his fellow Jewish brothers and sisters

He continued to address them in order that they may see their need

And the need to take the message to the Gentiles

How zealous are you?

How knowledgeable are you about God?

Where does your knowledge come from?

Is Jesus Lord?

Is your heart filled with passion for Christ?

Paul warned the religious, Jewish, people and there is a warning to all of us

There will be those who “having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them”. 2 Timothy 3:5

The power is not how good and great we become

But how good and great God is and what He can make us become

To Him be all the glory and power and strength

Paul Defends His Ministry

The Book of Romans is all about Paul

defending his calling to the Gentiles.

Paul is a Jew and understands

the Jewish life and way of thinking.

Paul’s heart never stopped beating for His Jewish

 brothers and sisters.

 Romans 9:1-6 and Romans 10:1…

Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God

for the Israelites is that they may be saved.

Paul also recognized his Jewish brothers and sisters

were just as lost as the Gentiles.

Paul saw the privilege life the Jewish people had.

For I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, those of my own race, the people of Israel. Theirs is the adoption as sons; theirs the divine glory, the covenants, the receiving of the law, the temple worship and the promises. Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of Christ, who is God over all, forever praised! Amen.

Romans 9:3-5

The Jews have a great history of God’s presence

yet they lost the meaning of life.

The Jews are proud of their heritage

as children of Abraham.

And the special favor of God that came

through the promise.

Yet, they forgot how the promise was obtained.

It was obtained…

 By faith and God credited

Abraham’s faith as righteousness.

The Jews strongly embraced the law that came to Moses.

This changed the Jewish view from

faith in God’s work to their own works.

Faith is the mental and emotional

inward belief that changes our

life from the inside to the outside.

The Law or our works is the outward show of good

and our actions become more important

then our faith in God.

Paul understands the strong religious

convictions of the Jews and he says this…

For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge.   Since they did not know the righteousness that comes from God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness. Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.

Romans 10:2-4

Zeal is a good thing.

Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.

Romans 12:11

The problem Paul addressed was they are zealous

for God, but their zeal was not based on knowledge.

It is not that the Jews did not have knowledge.

They studied the law.

 They knew the scriptures.

 Yet, they were without knowledge.

Their knowledge produced legalism.

Paul understood this

because He was once like them.

If anyone else thinks he has reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; 6 as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for legalistic righteousness, faultless.

But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ.

Philippians 3:4-8

Paul in the 10th chapter of Romans

was trying to get this message across.

The message is…

We do not have the power to change God.

We can not ascend into heaven by our righteousness.

If that were so,

 we would bring Christ down.

And no matter what we do,

we do not have the power to

raise Christ from the dead.

In verses 9-11, Paul in detail described the message of faith.

The message both Jews and Gentiles

need to hear to be saved.

That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10:9-10

The first thing that needs to be

addressed is our confession…

"Jesus is Lord"

The word Lord means ownership, control.

We confess we belong to Christ.

The confession of Lord is to say…

“I will do what You want me to do.”

“I will say what You want me to say.”

“I will go where You want me to go.”

This is exactly what Abraham did when he met God.

The second thing is, “belief”

It is very important we see where we believe

“in our heart”.

The heart is the seat of our affections, love and desire.

In our heart has to be the belief that

God raised Christ from the dead.

The last enemy, the greatest enemy, is death.

No one can beat death.

It is appointed for a man to die.

Only God has the power over death.

He proved it by raising Jesus Christ,

His Son, from the dead on the third day.

To believe is to trust.

Paul strongly makes his point…

For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile — the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."

Romans 10:12-13

Again…

All have sin and fall short”

Paul clearly laid out the need for

everyone to hear the Good News.

Both Jews and Gentiles.

The need to preach this message everywhere.

As Paul says to the Jews first

 but also to the Gentiles.

Because Paul cared so much for his fellow

 Jewish brothers and sisters…

He continued to address them in order

that they may see their need and

the need to take the message to the Gentiles.

How zealous are you?

How knowledgeable are you about God?

Where does your knowledge come from?

Is Jesus Lord?

Is your heart filled with passion for Christ?

Paul warned the religious, Jewish

people and there is a warning to all of us…

There will be those who

having a form of godliness but denying its power.

Have nothing to do with them”.

2 Timothy 3:5

The power is not how good and great we become…

But how good and great God is

and what He can make us become.

To Him be all the glory and power and strength.

Scripture Reading

Romans 10:1-15 NIV

10:1 Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. 2 For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge.   3 Since they did not know the righteousness that comes from God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness. 4 Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.

5 Moses describes in this way the righteousness that is by the law: "The man who does these things will live by them."   6 But the righteousness that is by faith says: "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into heaven?'" (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 "or 'Who will descend into the deep?'" (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: 9 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. 11 As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame."   12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile — the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."

14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!"
