Power
Body of Power
The Human Body
It has the ability
to smell, taste, hear, see, and touch
It is able to
experience great pleasure and great pain
By His power God
raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also.
Do you not know that
your bodies are members of Christ himself?
Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who
is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were
bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.
What you smell,
taste, hear, see, and touch is to honor Christ and His body
Don’t make light of
anything you do in the body because
Christ paid a great
price for you and your body
Which He will
someday by His power raise from the dead
Body of Power
The Human Body…
It is amazing.
It is what we live in.
It has the ability to smell, taste, hear, see, and touch.
It is able to experience great pleasure and great pain.
The body has a cycle, it gains strength and then loses it.
The body needs food.
"Food for the
stomach and the stomach for food"
1 Corinthians 6:13
Food becomes part of us, we become
one with it and it becomes one with us.
There is a lot of truth in the statement…
“You are what you eat”.
The body’s health is greatly affected by what it eats.
As the body has strong desire for
food, it has a strong desire for sex.
Paul in 1 Corinthians 6 is warning us of the powers
that destroy the body and the power that gives life.
Just like food has a uniting
effect with our body so does sex.
“Do you not know that
he who unites himself with a prostitute is
one with her in body?
For it is said, "The two will become one flesh."
1 Corinthians
6:16
It seems that the question of legality gets
brought up by the believers at Corinth is the
first few verses of Chapter 6 of 1 Corinthians.
Paul rebukes them
because they have
lost the ability to judge the matters of life.
I say this to shame
you. Is it possible that there is nobody among
you wise enough to
judge a dispute between believers?
1 Corinthians 6:5
1 Corinthians 6:5
The church should be a place where even the
weakest believer can judge right and wrong.
This pertains to matters between
one another as well as food we eat.
Paul takes this point to the area of sex.
In America sex advertises everything.
It seems the law of the land is if
two people consent to sex it is ok.
There are advertisings that say…
“Life is short have
an affair”.
Our bodies have a strong drive for lust and for love.
Flirty women are everywhere, most are not
looking for sex, but use it to get other favors.
When a woman, other than the wife with her husband, flirts
with sweet words, or reveals parts of her body or is just
willing to take a man to bed for some benefit she is
prostituting.
That alluring will draw a man to become one with her.
His attention, time and energy will be with her.
Becoming one is connecting.
Paul is warning of the dangers of the things we connect to.
Because the things we connect to make us one with that thing.
Paul says…
"Everything is
permissible for me"-but not everything is beneficial.
Everything is
permissible for me"
-but I will not be
mastered by anything.
Paul reminds the believers that they left the things they
were one with in the world for the Kingdom of God.
Paul reminds them of the dangers of the power that
can destroy their bodies in this life and the life to come.
Paul reminds them of God’s power
to raise the body from the dead.
The power to give us an eternal body.
By his power God
raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also. 15 Do you not know
that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members
of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never!
Our bodies are meant to be one with Christ.
Our bodies are to be part of His body.
If we are one with Christ we will be
connected to others who are connected to
Jesus Christ who is the Head of His Body.
We will not connect with those things
that keep us from being one with Him.
Remember…
Do you not know that
your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received
from God? You are not your own; you were
bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.
What you smell, taste, hear, see, and
touch is to honor Christ and His body.
Don’t make light of anything you do in the body because…
Christ paid a great price for you and your body,
which He will someday by His power raise from the dead.
Scripture Reading
1 Corinthians 6:9-20 NIV
9 Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the
kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters
nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders 10 nor thieves nor
the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom
of God. 11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were
sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the
Spirit of our God.
12 "Everything is permissible for me"-but not
everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible for me"-but I
will not be mastered by anything. 13 "Food for the stomach and the stomach
for food"-but God will destroy them both. The body is not meant for sexual
immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 By his power God
raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also. 15 Do you not know
that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members
of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! 16 Do you not know that he
who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said,
"The two will become one flesh."
17 But he who unites himself with the Lord is one with him in spirit.
18 Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits
are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. 19 Do
you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom
you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a
price. Therefore honor God with your body.
