Jesus’ Words in Red
Two Final Words of Jesus
Jesus said, “I am thirsty” Jesus
said, "It is
finished."
"It is finished."
The word “finished”
is the Greek word
Is tetelestai,
an accounting term that means “paid in
full”
Jesus paid the price
for your sin
He also said
“I am thirsty”
Will you pour out
your life as a drink offering for Him?
Two Final Words of
Jesus
If you have ever had a financial debt…
A debt that has weighted you down…
An obligation that keep you from freedom…
If you have made the final payment…
You know what joy is!
A load that is lifted.
A freedom to live life more fully.
When Jesus said…
"It is finished."
The word “finished”
is the Greek word.
Is tetelestai, an accounting
term that means “paid
in full.”
When Jesus uttered those words,
He was declaring the debt owed to His
Father was wiped away completely and forever.
Not that Jesus wiped away any debt that He
owed to the Father; rather, Jesus eliminated
the debt owed by mankind—the debt of sin.
Jesus prayed in the garden before His arrest…
I have brought you glory on earth by
completing the work you gave me to do.
John 17:4
Jesus describes the work He was to complete.
“seek and save that which is lost”
Luke 19:10
“The wages of sin is
death.”
The debt kept us short of God’s glory.
The debt had to be paid.
Sin had to be punished.
23 for all have sinned
and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified freely by his grace
through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented him as a
sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate
his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed
beforehand unpunished— 26 he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present
time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.
Romans
3:23-26
Only through God in the flesh
could the world be reconciled.
18 All this is from
God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of
reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not
counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of
reconciliation.
2 Corinthians 5:18-19
The debt started in the Garden of Eden.
Adam and Eve’s disobedience caused them
and us to be separated from God’s glory.
The curse is described in Genesis 3.
The hope is also described in Genesis 3:15…
And I will put enmity
between you and the woman,
and between your
offspring and hers;
he will crush your
head, and you will strike his heel."
Jesus the “Son of Man” and the “Son of God”…
The offspring of man and the offspring of God…
Crushes Satan’s head.
Through faith in Jesus our debt of sin is paid for.
Sadly, there are those who will never enter
into the rest that comes with the debt being paid.
They will never believe and put their trust in
Jesus and receive forgiveness of their sins.
But for those who do commit their life to
Jesus, He removes their sin, the debt of death.
The words Jesus spoke before He said
“It is finished” were "I am thirsty."
Was it a natural drink Jesus
wanted or a spiritual one?
Look at the Apostle Paul as he comes to the
end of his life and says he has finished the course.
He says…
“I am already being
poured out like a drink offering,”
6 For I am already
being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure.
7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the
faith. 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the
Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day — and not only to me,
but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
2 Timothy
4:6-8
When Jesus died on the cross,
He poured out His life for you.
In return we should pour out our lives for Him.
Fight the good fight of faith.
Because we have a race to finish.
After Jesus said “It is finished”
and paid the debt…
He
entered into His glory.
That glory waits for us.
So fight the good fight
of faith.
Finish the race strong.
A crown of
righteousness is waiting.
Scripture Reading
John 19:16-30 NIV
16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.
So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. 17 Carrying his own
cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called
Golgotha). 18 Here they crucified him, and with him two others — one on each
side and Jesus in the middle.
19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross.
It read: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. 20 Many of the Jews read this
sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign
was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. 21 The chief priests of the Jews
protested to Pilate, "Do not write 'The King of the Jews,' but that this
man claimed to be king of the Jews."
22 Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have
written."
23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes,
dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment
remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.
24 "Let's not tear it," they said to one another.
"Let's decide by lot who will get it."
This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled which
said,
"They divided my garments among them
and cast lots for my clothing."
So this is what the soldiers did.
25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's
sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his
mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his
mother, "Dear woman, here is your son," 27 and to the disciple, "Here is your mother." From that time on,
this disciple took her into his home.
28 Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that
the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I
am thirsty." 29 A jar of
wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a
stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus' lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus
said, "It is finished." With that, he
bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
