Jesus’ Words in Red Before He Departed Purpose of the Promise

Jesus’ Words in Red Before He Departed

Purpose of the Promise

“…be baptized with the Holy Spirit."

God’s purpose of giving us the Baptism of the Holy Spirit
Is to unleash our spirit
So that we can communicate our spirit to HIS SPIRIT
This strengthens the believer and prepares the believer to witness to the world
Jesus not only taught with Wisdom, Knowledge and Understand
He was led by the Spirit with many convincing works
Unexplainable by human understanding

Purpose of the Promise

Why the Baptism in the Holy Spirit?

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you;
and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria,
and to the ends of the earth."

The first work of the Holy Spirit in our lives is
to convict us of sin, righteousness and Judgment.

When we by faith confess our
sin the Holy Spirit comes into us.

Old things pass away and
all things become new.
 2 Corinthians 5:17

Without the Holy Spirit in us
we cannot become His children.

This transforming work of
the Holy Spirit is “Salvation”.

The transformation of our character
to become holy as He is holy.
1 Peter 1:15,16

This is the development of the
fruit of the Spirit in us.
Galatians 5:22

The second purpose of the
Holy Spirit is to empower us.

God wants more than good character.
He wants us to do His work.

Jesus told us we must ask for and pursue the Spirit.
Luke 11:9-12

Jesus said the Baptism of the Holy Spirit was to
empower us to be His witnesses to the ends of the earth.
Acts 1:8

After the 120 believers waited for the Baptism of
the Holy Spirit in Acts 2 the Spirit came upon them

All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began
to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
Acts 2:4

The Spirit enabled them to speak
other languages they did not know.

We are told two things about this experience.

The first is the words they were speaking were declaring…

“we hear them declaring the wonders of God”…
Acts 2:11

The second is the people from other nations
heard this “in our own tongues!”
Acts 2:11

The believers were praising God in
a language they did not understand.

The Apostle Paul talks about this with the Corinthians.

Paul tells us the tongue or language is from his spirit.
It makes sense that the Holy Spirit and our spirit are able to
communicate on a level that our mind does not understand.

That is why Paul says…

I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful…
I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind;
I will sing with my spirit,
but I will also sing with my mind.
1 Corinthians 14 14-15

Paul also says…

I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.
1 Corinthians 14:18

But when he does it in church it is limited.

Tongues gives personal edification
as your spirit is worshiping God.

In Acts 2 the believers were not only worshiping God
with their spirit as the Holy Spirit enabled them…

They were a witness to others from various nations.

I believe we know very little about the human spirit.

I also believe we know little about the Holy Spirit.

Jesus taught from an intellectual mind.

The mind can be developed to embrace
wisdom, knowledge and understanding.

We should all study to show ourselves approved.

It is also true we can develop our spirit.

This comes as we spend
time with the Holy Spirit.

Paul said he prayed and sang in
the spirit as well as with his mind.

When the Holy Spirit enables our spirit to
pray and sing in tongues, powerful things
happen that go beyond our understanding.

This may sound weird to us but Jesus, by the
Spirit, healed the sick and raised the dead.

These things are not understood by reasoning but can
only be explained by the power of the Spirit of God.

It seems weird that we will someday shed
these bodies and brains, and for the believer,
our spirit will live forever with the Lord.

I cannot comprehend all
of that with my intellect.

But I do want to Walk in the Spirit more
every day so that when that day comes
it will not be foreign to me.

It is this initial speaking in tongues
that builds up the believer to
become a powerful witness.

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you;
and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria,
and to the ends of the earth."

Scripture Reading

Acts 1:1-8 NIV

1:1 In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach 2 until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. 3 After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. 4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."

6 So when they met together, they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?"

7 He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
