Jesus’ Words in Red Before His Departure The Command Carried Out

Jesus’ Words in Red Before His Departure

The Command Carried Out

“…he gave them this command: … “be baptized with the Holy Spirit."

"Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?"

Great messages are being preached in churches today
People are being converted
The question is do we have the “Power” Jesus wants us to have
Are we making sure every believer is baptized and filled with the Holy Spirit
“Wait” for the Holy Spirit before we “Go” is still a valid command
The early church carried out Christ’s command
 Have we?

The Command Carried Out

Jesus’ disciples waited in an upper room.

When the Holy Spirit came 120 disciples were…

All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them…God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. said
we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!"  Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does this mean?"
Acts 2:4,5,11,12

Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off — for all whom the Lord our God will call."
Acts 2:38-39

With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation." Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.
Acts 2:40-41

The first example of the baptism with
the Holy Spirit converted 3,000 souls.

The second time we see the
command carried out is in Act 8.

The church was scattered because
of persecution in Jerusalem.

Philip preached the Word with miraculous signs.

Many were converted and baptized in water.

When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. When they arrived, they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had simply been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. Then Peter and John placed their hands on them,
and they received the Holy Spirit.
Acts 8:14-17

These new believers received the Holy
Spirit after conversion and water baptism.

When they received the Baptism in the Holy Spirit
there was some visible signs that Simon saw.
 V. 18

The 3rd time we see the command carried out is in Acts 10.

Peter was sent to Cornelius a Gentile who prayed to God.

God interrupted Peter while he was speaking.

While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God.
Acts 10:44-46

The fourth time we see the
command carried out is in Acts 19.

While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples and asked them,
"Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?"
They answered, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit."
So Paul asked, "Then what baptism did you receive?"
"John's baptism," they replied.
Paul said, "John's baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus." On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. There were about twelve men in all.
Acts 19:1-7

Paul’s question is still relevant today.

"Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?"

After your conversion to Christ have you
received the Baptism in the Holy Spirit?

The early church was more than a place
where great messages were preached.

The power of God was manifested and
the church grew despite great persecution.

Great messages are being preached in churches today.

People are being converted.

The question is do we have the
“Power” Jesus wants us to have?

Are we making sure every believer is
baptized and filled with the Holy Spirit?

“Wait” for the Holy Spirit before
we “Go” is still a valid command.

The early church carried out
Christ’s command… Have we?

Scripture Reading

wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach 2 until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. 3 After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. 4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."

6 So when they met together, they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?"

7 He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
