Calm the Storm

Calm the Storm

Can’t sleep in a storm?

Do waves make you sea sick?

Is worry growing?

Has your conversation turned more negative?

Then be careful how you wake Jesus
who is sleeping in your boat.

When the storms of life come
they can become a distraction.

They can get us all worked up.

And when we get worked up,
we like to get others worked up, as well.

Husbands sometimes get in trouble with their wives
when they don’t show the same emotional concern.

This is what happened with the disciples
when a storm kicked up as they were crossing the lake.

One by one fear took over their lives.

You can see this as they awoke Jesus.

Mark 4:38 NIV
Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion.
The disciples woke him and said to him,
"Teacher, don't you care if we drown?"

You can see they are emotionally upset,
“Don’t you care?”

After Jesus commands the winds to be still,
He had a talk with the disciples.

He asked,
“Why are you so afraid?”

Their fear became a distraction.

It caused them to lose sight of faith.

That is why Jesus asked them,

“Do you still have no faith?”

Jesus was questioning their spiritual development.

Jesus saw the storm as a distraction
but the disciples saw it as destruction.

The lesson we can learn from this is:

Don’t allow the storms of life to get you all worked up.

Turn to God in faith that He will take care of you.

Nothing is impossible for God!

Not even storm-like winds.

Let it not be said of us, “You of little faith.”

Scripture Reading

Mark 4:35-41 NIV

35 That day when evening came,
he said to his disciples,
"Let us go over to the other side."
36 Leaving the crowd behind,
they took him along,
just as he was, in the boat.
There were also other boats with him.
37 A furious squall came up,
and the waves broke over the boat,
so that it was nearly swamped.
38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion.
The disciples woke him and said to him,
"Teacher, don't you care if we drown?"

39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves,
"Quiet! Be still!"
Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

40 He said to his disciples,
"Why are you so afraid?
Do you still have no faith?"

41 They were terrified and asked each other,
"Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!"
