Fighting for Your Blessing

The Blessing

By William M. Self, Sr.

God said, "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated."

Both failed in character

But God loves those whose heart is set on receiving His Blessing

Fighting for Your Blessing

One of the hardest stories for me to embrace is
the story of Jacob and Esau.

Yet, when I look at life, this
story is all too true for all of us.

Abraham received the blessing of God
and he passed it on to his son, Isaac.

Now Isaac was about to die and the blessing of God
was to be passed down to the third generation.

Isaac had two sons very different in character.

Esau was the first born, a man of the outdoors,
a man’s man and the favorite of his father.

Jacob had soft skin and was his mother’s favorite.

Both Esau and Jacob’s character were severely flawed.

There was this battle from birth
between them for the “Blessing”.

As twins in their mother Rebecca’s womb, they struggled.

They were definitely not identical twins.

Esau being the first born had
the right to the blessing of God.

But Esau did not take it seriously.

Jacob wanted the blessing more
than anything, even his character.

Jacob at birth grabbed Esau’s
heel to pull him back into the womb
but failed and took second place.

Jacob took advantage of Esau’s
weakness after a long hunt and bought
the birth right with a bowl of soup.

Jacob was the negotiator,
looking out for his own interest.

Jacob wanted the blessing so
bad he wrestled with an angel.

Both Esau and Jacob failed in
 their approach to the blessing.

In the end, God said…

“Just as it is written: "Jacob I loved,
but Esau I hated."”  Romans 9:13

This statement was not on the bases of character.

God was not pleases with the character of either.

It was based on the desire to get the blessing.

How important is the blessing of God to you?

Is your life’s focus to receive God’s blessing?

Scripture Reading

Genesis 27:34-36 NIV

34 When Esau heard his father's words,
he burst out with a loud and
bitter cry and said to his father,
"Bless me — me too, my father!"

35 But he said, "Your brother came
deceitfully and took your blessing."

36 Esau said, "Isn't he rightly named Jacob?
He has deceived me these two times:
He took my birthright, and now he's taken my blessing!"
Then he asked, "Haven't you reserved any blessing for me?"
