Promise of Rest - Nourishment of God's Word

Promise of Rest

By William M. Self

God’s Word gives health to the

Spirit, Soul, & Body

When eaten properly

“When your words came, I ate them; they were
my joy and my heart's delight” Jeremiah 15:16

The prophet Jeremiah must have loved food
and had some understanding of its nourishment.

Eating from the five food groups
will give nourishment to the body.

But eating God’s Word will nourish the spirit, soul, and body.

After a wonderful meal with my children and grandchildren,
we had some cake and ice cream to celebrate Lexi’s birthday.

My son, Marty, after two bites of ice cream got sick.

What was sweet in his mouth became bitter in his stomach.

Something in his body did not agree with what he was eating.

His body rejected it, if you know what I mean.

By evening the abdominal pain and the dehydration brought
him to the place where we had to take him to the hospital.

After four days of hospital testing, we still
had questions of the cause, however the
tests did reveal Marty had high sugar levels.

Although insulin will help the pancreas do its job,
the real issue is a change of diet and the way of eating.

We have learned that if you eat too much, too fast,
it is like dumping three feet of snow verses
three inches on the pancreas and it cannot handle it.
We also learned we needed to change our diet and exercise.

John writes in the Book of Revelation, the Word of God
was sweet in his mouth but bitter in his stomach.

We can be spiritually unhealthy and eat God’s Word
and it gives us no nutritional value because we reject it.

God’s Word has all the food groups.

God’s Word nourishes us as babies with milk.

Like all mammals, milk nourishes us until
our bodies can handle more solid foods.

But unlike all other mammals, humans continue to drink milk.

The milk of God’s Word gives us the assurance
of God’s love and faithfulness.

We are designed to mature and become productive.

We are made with a purpose.

It is the meat of God’s Word that gives us the
ability to distinguish between good and evil.

The ability to live right.

I have known many people who are sick because
they don’t take time to digest God’s Word.

And many who don’t eat a balanced diet of God’s Word.

Don’t eat what you want, eat what you need and chew it properly.

Rest comes to those who nourish their
spirit, soul, and body with God’s Word.

Scripture Reading

Jeremiah 15:16 NIV
16 When your words came, I ate them;
they were my joy and my heart's delight,

1 Peter 2:2 KJV
2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk
of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

Hebrews 5:11-14 NIV
11 We have much to say about this, but it is hard
to explain because you are slow to learn.
12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers,
you need someone to teach you the elementary
truths of God's word all over again.
You need milk, not solid food!
13 Anyone who lives on milk,
being still an infant, is not acquainted
 with the teaching about righteousness.
14 But solid food is for the mature,
who by constant use have trained themselves
to distinguish good from evil.

Revelation 10:9-10 NIV
9 So I went to the angel and asked him to give me the little scroll.
He said to me, "Take it and eat it.
It will turn your stomach sour,
but in your mouth it will be as sweet as honey."
10 I took the little scroll from the angel's hand and ate it.
It tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth,
but when I had eaten it, my stomach turned sour.
