God Said to Man
Genesis 3:17-19
To Adam he said, "Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, 'You must not eat of it,'
"Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it
all the days of your life.
It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.
By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food
until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken;
for dust you are and to dust you will return."
What is our take away for this?
Be a listener, but stand up for the truth in love
Providing for your family is painful work, the ground is cursed
Don’t let the cursed days keep you from loving your wife, children and work
Because this life is short and we will soon return to the cursed dirt
But we do not have to die without hope
Jesus Christ arose from the dead and has invited us to live with Him in a New Heaven and a New Earth
So be sure you are sowing for the provisions of eternity
God Said to Man
After eating from the Tree of Knowledge,
While God addresses Eve
with the pain and sorry of family…
God addresses Adam with the pain
and sorrow of being a provider.
Before God addresses Adam’s consequences,
God holds Adam accountable…
And to Adam He said,
Because you have listened and
given heed to the voice of your wife and
have eaten of the tree of
which I commanded you...
Genesis 3:17 AMP
Adam listened to Eve.
Listening is always good.
We are to listen in order to get counsel.
Proverbs 15:22
We should listen in order to understand
where the other person is coming from.
So Adam’s problem was not
listening to Eve, but giving heed.
Adam sinned by not standing
up and speaking the truth.
Paul tells us not to be infants tossed
by the craftiness of others and deceitful
scheming, but speak the truth in love.
Ephesians 4:14-15
Because Adam did not take a stand for
truth in love, the ground would be cursed.
Adam’s and man’s role to provide for
the wife and family would come with pain.
From the time Adam ate from the fruit
of the Tree of Knowledge, eating forever
would not come without painful toil.
It is mid-August, 2021, temperatures
are in the 80’s and very humid.
Working outside causes sweat and the
sweat from the brow runs down into
the eyes and the salt burns the eyes
as your vision is impaired.
It is days like that I look forward to Fall.
Years ago, the church was offered the use of
some very rich farm land for a community garden.
Several of us got very excited and
worked the ground to plant seeds.
The seeds did well and so did the weeds.
We could not keep up with the weeds.
It came to a point where you could not
see the plants we had grown from seeds.
I remember walking through the 3
and 4 foot high weeds to find the harvest.
Much of the vegetables had grown very
large, but had past the point of eating.
The painful toil of that garden ended
our community dream of gardening.
Solomon writes a whole book called
Ecclesiastes on the toil of a man’s labor.
Over and over again, he says all is
meaningless and a vexation of the spirit.
Even though Solomon took pleasure in the
work of his hands, he felt it was all meaningless.
Ecclesiastes 2:10-11
No wonder men who are very successful
in gaining wealth say, “it is never enough”.
The toil of our labor is to provide for the family…
Yet, the time of labor keeps us away from our family.
Solomon’s words in Ecclesiastes 9:9-10 says
what God said to Adam from a life of experience…
Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun— all your meaningless days. For this is your lot in life and in your toilsome labor under the sun. Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the grave, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.
Even though the ground we sow our seed in
is cursed, it will grow and there is provision.
Learn to enjoy your wife, family and work
for soon you, too, will return to
the dust you were created from.
What is our take away for this?
Be a listener.
But stand up for the truth in love.
Providing for your family is painful work,
the ground is cursed.
Don’t let the cursed days keep you
from loving your wife, children and work.
Because this life is short and we
will soon return to the cursed dirt.
But we do not have to die without hope.
Jesus Christ arose from the dead and
has invited us to live with Him in
a New Heaven and a New Earth.
So be sure you are sowing for the provisions of eternity.
Galatians 6:7-10 NIV
7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.
