James Sin and Sickness

James

Sin and Sickness

James in the first 4 Chapters of the Book of James

Talked about a lot of sin in the church

As long as there are people, there will be sin

There are none righteous

All have sinned and fall short

Paul and James saw sin bring sickness into the church

They saw the problem of sin and sickness being resolved

And healed as people prayed for each other

Being compassionate with each other

Although Paul and James saw the seriousness of sin leading to death

They remained positive, knowing that properly discerning the Body of Christ

Humbly loving one another, sharing our food at the Table of the Lord

Taking time to rub into the body the healing oils

And spending time praying for discernment on behalf of others

This is what God honors and He will bring healing and restoration

Sin and Sickness

In James 5:14-16  we see sin

and sickness linked together…

Therefore confess your sins to each other

and pray for each other so that you may be healed.

verse16

Throughout the Bible, we see the

need for healing because of sin.

We should note that not all sickness

is because the sick person sinned.

Remember Job, a righteous man,

but Satan inflicted him with sickness.

And the disciples questioning

Jesus about the blind man…

Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents,

that he was born blind? Jesus answered,

Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents.

 John 9:2-3 KJV

We do however find sickness is used by

our loving Father to bring discipline…

He said, "If you listen carefully to the voice of the LORD

your God and do what is right in his eyes,

if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees,

I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians,

for I am the LORD, who heals you."

Exodus 15:26

Deuteronomy 28 reveals the one who

keeps the Lord’s ways will be blessed.

But the one who does not follow carefully

the words of the Lord will be cursed…

The LORD will also bring on you every kind of sickness

and disaster not recorded in this Book of the Law,

until you are destroyed.

Deuteronomy 28:61

In John 5, we see Jesus healing a man who could not walk.

Jesus said to the man after He healed him…

"See, you are well again. Stop sinning or

something worse may happen to you."

John 5:14

Paul warns the church that some of the

sickness and death in the church

they were experiencing is a result of sin…

That is why many among you are weak and sick,

and a number of you have fallen asleep.

But if we judged ourselves,

we would not come under judgment.

1 Corinthians 11:30-31

This is what God honors and He

Let’s not moan and complain when we see

sickness in the church or in our brother or sister.

Let’s not find ourselves with self-righteousness

when we see God bring discipline.

Let’s pray for effectiveness.

Christ is coming back for His Bride.

A Glorious Church without spot or wrinkle.

This will take all of us being moved with compassion

when we see the sin and sickness of others.

Remember the 10 virgins?

Be like the ones who were ready for the long night.

They made sure they had enough oil and

their wicks were properly manicured.

Don’t let your light go out…

 Pray for one another.

Scripture Reading

James 5:13-16 NIV

13 Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. 14 Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.
