The Main Thing
A Nation Under God /
If I Were an Atheist
If I were an atheist I would support Christians and the
church
Christians do more good for others than any other
organization in the world
Christians are Jesus Christ followers
Jesus taught His followers to love one another
I am proud to be an American, as America’s founding
fathers focused on being “one
nation under God”
A Nation “in God we
trust”
It was the Christians who founded the hospitals in this land
to care for the afflicted,
the schools of learning to educate everyone,
the compassion to reach out to the oppressed of the world
Sadly, economics has replaced the Love of God in many of
these organizations
Despite those changes, the church has not stopped caring
for others by reaching
out in the communities, at home and around the world
A Nation Under God
If I were an atheist I would support Christians and the
church.
Christians do more good for others than
any other organization in the world.
Christians are Jesus Christ followers.
Jesus taught His followers to love one another.
Jesus taught all the laws of God are fulfilled in two
commands:
“Thou shalt love the Lord
thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This
is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt
love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and
the prophets.”
Jesus did not get caught up in law,
not even the law of Moses.
Jesus focused on the inner condition of a person.
This inner change is a foundation of love.
This total love for God enables us to love each other.
I am proud to be an American, as America’s founding
fathers focused on being “one
nation under God”.
A Nation “in God we
trust”.
It was the Christians who founded the hospitals in this land
to care for the afflicted, the schools of learning to
educate
everyone, the compassion to reach out to the oppressed of
the world.
Sadly, economics has replaced the Love of
God in many of these organizations.
Despite those changes, the church has not stopped caring for
others
by reaching out in the communities, at home and around the
world.
It is said religious organizations in 2014 received
$118.64 billion in donations for charity.
On top of all this, churches provide everything
from meals, tangible goods, child care, lodging,
counseling, courses, career services and more.
All of those services would not show up on a balance
sheet as outreach/service to poor individuals because
they tend to just be a part of the life of the community.
Remove all of this from America and what would you have?
Much of what Christians do goes unrecognized,
as acts of kindness are done in a way the right
hand does not know what the left hand is doing.
These acts of kindness are for God’s glory.
The compass of a Christian always points to God, the
One who created us that He might express His love for us.
A moral compass that leads to a life of “love, joy, peace, forbearance,
kindness,
goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
Against
such things there is no law.”
A serious question is this…
“If God is
not your moral compass, what guides you?”
For most “self-preservation” is what
guides the person without Jesus.
So if I were an atheist I would support Christians
and the church for the good
they do.
Scripture Reading
Galatians 6:7-10 NIV
7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what
he sows. 8 The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will
reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will
reap eternal life. 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper
time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. 10 Therefore, as we have
opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to
the family of believers.
Ephesians 2:10 NIV
10 For we are God's
workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works,
which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Hebrews 13:16 NIV
16 And do not forget to do good and to share with others,
for with such sacrifices God is pleased.
1 Peter 3:13-18 NIV
13 Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? 14
But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. "Do not
fear what they fear; do not be frightened." 15 But in your hearts set apart Christ as
Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the
reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16
keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your
good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. 17 It is better, if it is God's will, to
suffer for doing good than for doing evil. 18 For Christ died for sins once for
all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.
