Swearing
Where Does It Come From?
The larger outer part
of the brain is called the Cerebrum
This is where we
process logistical thought and grammar
The small inter part
of the brain is called the Amygdala
This is where our
emotions come from what we call the heart
Swearing comes from
our emotions
The expletives are an
eruption of our emotions
Brought on by fear
and frustration
So when we say those
offensive words they make us feel good
It is like a drug
that makes you feel better but does not take away the problem
After we get addicted it loses its
effectiveness to make us feel better
So we look for a
stronger drug to make us feel better
Sadly we don’t deal
with the problem
Because the only
thing that matters is to “feel better”
Just because you feel like it is not a good
reason to do it
Where Does It Come From?
The heart is deceitful
above all things
Jeremiah
17:9
Discipline your emotions before
they reach your tongue.
Where does it come from?
Swearing is on the increase,
it seems everyone is
doing it.
It’s popularity is making it more excitable.
Searching the internet you will find many
articles claiming swearing is good for you.
They say swearing starts in many of us at age 2.
It is also popular when looking at who swears,
like looking at presidents of the United States.
So whether you are young with a very small
vocabulary or older and very well educated,
swearing is a part of vocabulary.
So what is swearing?
Swearing is defined as…
“the use of offensive
language”
Cursing has a slightly different meaning…
“uttering offensive
words in anger or annoyance”
to speak or wish a adversity misfortune on
someone or thing
We also speak Oaths…
“a solemn promise, often invoking a divine witness,
regarding one’s future
action or behavior”
Swear words fall into
four main categories…
Religion, Sex, Excretion, Slurs
If swearing didn’t seem to have some
value, none of us would do it.
Science tells us that the brain
functions through its different parts.
- In most people, the left hemisphere is in charge of language. The right hemisphere creates the emotional content of language.
- Language processing is a "higher" brain function and takes place in the cerebral cortex.
- Emotion and instinct are "lower" brain functions and take place deep inside the brain.
All parts of the brain are designed and
created by God.
But our use of it is not necessary
godly.
The higher brain
function is developed over time,
the first 2 years of
life it develops very quickly.
You might say the
higher brain function is logical.
The lower brain
function is the emotional component.
When something
startles us there is an
emotion of fear and
we quickly react.
Because we react so
quickly our
responses may not be
the best response.
This lower part of
the brain, the
emotional component
that causes us to react.
Ever have someone
saying BOO!!!
to you in the dark
and you quickly
turnaround and punch
them in the face.
Or, you speak words that are not formed sentences but
burst expletives that have no relationship to the issues at
hand.
These words do not communicate in
logical sentences but they do communicate
strong anger, frustration, or emotion.
Some say this is a good thing to give the brain
the release of those four letter words.
I contend that we should develop
disciplines of all areas in the brain.
Someone has once said…
“Emotions are a good
servant but a bad master”
Also, “Logic is a good servant but a bad master”
The Bible says…
“The heart is
deceitful above all things”
Jeremiah
17:9
Swearing comes from the heart.
The expletives are an eruption of our emotions.
They do not give thought to
how those words offend others.
The only thing that matters is the
good feeling of releasing our emotions.
The problem is after the uncontrolled emotions
are released, logical minds will process it.
The Bible says…
Test everything. Hold on to the good.
Avoid every kind of
evil.
1 Thessalonian
5:20-22
Sadly, these expletives words
that have no
grammatical purpose but do carry meaning.
They reveal the evil in our hearts.
Those who have researched the “benefits” of swearing
say the more we swear the less effect it has for us.
It is like a drug that makes you feel better
but does not take away the problem.
After we get addicted, it loses its
effectiveness to make us feel better.
So we look for a stronger drug to make us feel better.
Sadly, we don’t deal
with the problem because
the only thing that matters is to “feel better”.
Just because you feel
like it
is not a good reason to do it.
Scripture Reading
Jeremiah 17:9-10 NIV
10 "I the LORD search the heart
and examine the mind,
to reward a man according to his conduct,
according to what his deeds deserve."
9 The heart is deceitful above all things
and beyond cure.
Who can understand it?
