Test of Love
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 says Love is…
We have all heard these
14 descriptive words of what love is,
maybe at a wedding or in a church sermon.
Maybe you have read 1 Corinthians 13:4-7.
But have you ever stacked your life next
to the stack of 14
words in 1 Corinthians 13?
1 Corinthians 13 says “Love is”.
Before we look at the list of 14,
let’s look at the word Love in the Greek.
It is agape meaning affection or benevolence.
Love is like addressing a letter with “Dear” ____________.
To truly take the love test you and I must put a name,
a person, we are directing our love to.
We must first call them Dear,
have affection or benevolence for them.
Maybe at this point,
we find ourselves failing the test
as there are people we would not call them dear to us.
The first thing on the list is…
#1 “love is patient”
How do you handle waiting?
Does your time schedule make you irritable?
When someone’s afflictions or actions causes you to suffer?
#2 love is kind
Words and actions that are being useful
Encouraging
#3 it does not envy
How do you handle people who have more than you?
Is jealousy in your heart?
#4 it does not boast
How often do you use the word “I”?
Do you brag, exaggerate, overstate, self-praise about yourself?
#5 It is not Proud
Do you have a feeling of superiority?
Because of birth, position. or money
#6 it is not rude
Are we using words that ridicule, taunt, belittle, humiliate, or insult?
#7 it is not self-seeking
Personal welfare over the interest of others.
#8 it is not easily angered
How quickly are you provoked or stirred?
#9 It keeps no record of wrongs
Do you keep score of bad, evil, harm, others have done to you?
How easy is it for you to forgive?
#10a love does not delight in evil
Evil – adikia injustice (unjust), iniquity (immoral or grossly unfair behavior)
The “character” of evil, the “act” of evil, the “situation” of evil
If it is not right (unrighteousness) it is wrong.
There is nothing to like or love about evil
in a person or on a person or situation
#10b But rejoices with the truth
The word “But” connects “Truth” to the first part of the verse “Evil”
Evil or injustice is generally caused because the truth is hidden.
To love is to want truth.
As a witness in the court of law would
give evidence by a sworn statement.
To “Tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.”
The word “rejoice” sugchairo means
to sympathize in gladness
We can sympathize with others
and on lots of issues…
But our sympathy should always be above emotional
and bias and sympathize with truth.
Jesus said in John 8:31-32…
To the Jews who had believed him,
Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.
Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
John 8:34-35…
Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth,
everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
“The truth will set you free”
#11 it always protects
Protect here means “to roof over”
Love does not abandon, but creates a shelter.
Being that roof means you will take the beating of the wind and rain.
The word “always” means all, any, every, the whole
So, in light of the verse before this…
We are to cover a person whether they are wrong or right
in a way that the truth can set them free.
You can provide a roof of protection…
But if the person refuses to stay under the roof
they walk out from that protection.
#12 always trusts
This word trust is pisteuo meaning
to have faith, in, upon, or with respect to a person or thing
To entrust someone’s spiritual well being to Christ.
Love will pray for Christ to do
a spiritual work that you cannot do.
The word “always” trust
In “all” situations God is able to do
above all we could ask or think
Romans 14:4
#13 always hopes
Because God is able to do above all
we could ask or think.
We can in “all” or always have hope.
Love never gives up
#14 always perseveres
The word perseveres is hupomeno…
To stay under, to remain, to bear, fortitude
Love causes us to stay under a person
to carry one another’s burdens.
Galatians 6:2
To suffer the weight for others.
Note verse 7 says always 4 times
The word “always” means all, any, every, the whole.
No matter the place or time love always…
Protect, Trust, Hopes, Perseveres
