Matthew 26
Drink it Anew in my Father’s Kingdom
Matthew 26:29
I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father's kingdom."
The time is coming when we will drink the fruit of the vine
In the Kingdom of the Father with Jesus
Maybe the first miracle Jesus preformed also was to tell us of a wedding
Where the best wine will be brought out at last
God’s people have drunk the fruit of the vine anew
At the Passover then at the Table of the Lord
And soon the Marriage Supper of the Lamb
The best is yet to come
Drink it Anew in my Father’s Kingdom
Matthew 26 is filled with drama…
The plot to kill Jesus
The anointing with expensive ointment
The Passover and institution of the Lord’s Supper
Jesus’s prayer in Gethsemane
Jesus betrayed and arrested
The High Priest and his council trial and conviction of blasphemy
Peter denies knowing Jesus.
In the midst of this chapter…
While Jesus was observing the Passover meal
with His disciples…
Jesus added to the Passover script.
Matthew 26:26-29…
While they were eating,
Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it,
and gave it to his disciples, saying,
"Take and eat; this is my body."
Then he took the cup,
gave thanks and offered it to them, saying,
"Drink from it, all of you.
This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father's kingdom.
Jesus felt the importance of celebrating
the Passover meal with His disciples.
The Passover meal was an annual event.
It was commemorating the Hebrews’ liberation
from slavery in Egypt and the “passing over”
of the forces of destruction,
and the sparing of the first born of the Israelites…
When the Lord smote the land of Egypt
on the eve of the exodus.
Six days of celebration filled with
symbols of what God had done.
At the end of the meal…
Jesus took two of the key elements
of the Passover meal…
The Unleavened Bread and the Cup
filled with the fruit of the vine.
With these two sacred elements
Jesus introduced a New Covenant.
The Covenant of the Old was made
with the sacrifice of animals, for sin.
John the Baptist saw Jesus as…
“The Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world”
John 1:29, 36
The Cup of the Old Covenant was filled
with the fruit of the vine representing…
The blood that must be shed for sin.
The law requires that nearly everything
be cleansed with blood,
and without the shedding of blood
there is no forgiveness.
Hebrews 9:22
Jesus introduced the New Covenant
with the Unleavened Bread being…
His Body and the Cup being filled
with His blood for the forgiveness of sins.
The early Church celebrated this as…
The Lord’s Supper or Communion often.
There was not a requirement day or time
but it was celebrated regularly.
Paul tells us…
For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me." For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
The Lord’s Supper is a time of remembering
Jesus’s death till He comes again.
In Matthew 26:29 Jesus says about the cup…
I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine
from now on until that day when I drink it anew
with you in my Father's kingdom."
It is here we get a glimpse into the Kingdom.
Jesus says He will not drink again
until He drinks it “anew”
with you in my Father’s Kingdom.
“Anew” Greek kainos…
Properly, new in quality (innovation),
fresh in development or opportunity
– because "not found exactly like this before."
As respects form…
Recently made, fresh, recent, unused, unworn
As respects substance…
Of a new kind;
unprecedented, novel, uncommon, unheard of
When Jesus drinks of this cup again
with us it will be fresh, of a new kind.
Where will this happen?
Jesus says it will happen…
“In My Father’s Kingdom”
Jesus started His ministry preaching…
The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.
It is near.
This remained His message
throughout His time on earth.
Even after He returned from the grave…
He spent 40 days speaking of the Kingdom.
After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.
Acts 1:3-4
We have Jesus recorded by…
Mark, Luke and Matthew about this account.
Mark 14:25…
25 "I tell you the truth, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it anew in the kingdom of God."
Luke 22:15-18…
15 And he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God."
17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, "Take this and divide it among you. 18 For I tell you I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes."
Matthew 26:29…
I tell you,
I will not drink of this fruit of the vine
from now on until that day when
I drink it anew with you in my Father's kingdom.
When will this happen?
Luke tells us both eating the bread and drinking the cup
will not happen until…
It finds fulfillment in the Kingdom of God.
Paul gives us a lot of information in
Corinthians 11:23-26…
23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me." 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.
Paul said the Lord’s Supper was something
he was “passing on” to the Church at Corinth.
What Jesus did on the night He was betrayed
was to be carried out again and again
for the purpose of remembering Him.
Verse 26 gives us the answer…
For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup,
you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes
.
Jesus will come again
and we will eat and drink with Him
in His Father’s Kingdom.
So, when will it take place
and what will it look like?
The answer is in Revelation 19:6-9…
6 Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude,
like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting:
"Hallelujah!
For our Lord God Almighty reigns.
7 Let us rejoice and be glad
and give him glory!
For the wedding of the Lamb has come,
and his bride has made herself ready.
8 Fine linen, bright and clean,
was given her to wear."
(Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of the saints.)
9 Then the angel said to me, "Write: 'Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!'" And he added, "These are the true words of God."
When the Bride has made herself ready
with the linens of righteous acts,
this is the saints, God’s holy people.
It is at the wedding time when
the Groom returns for His Bride.
The Wedding will be celebrated with a feast
called the Marriage Supper of the Lamb.
Until that time…
His people will celebrate the Lord’s Supper
with each other.
They will experience a new wine.
But the time will come when the bridegroom
will be taken from them,
and on that day they will fast
.
21 "No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the new piece will pull away from the old, making the tear worse. 22 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, he pours new wine into new wineskins."
Mark 2:20-22
The new wine like the new covenant
in Christ’s blood needs new containers.
Wine changes a person.
While the disciples were waiting
for the promise after Jesus ascended into heaven
something happened.
The Holy Spirit filled the place
and the believers began to speak in tongues.
The people around them said…
“They have had too much wine”
Acts 2:13
Peter stood up and said…
“These men are not drunk as you suppose”
Acts 2:13
Peter goes on to say…
This was the promise God gave
that He would pour out His Spirit on All people.
The definition of the Kingdom in Romans 14:17…
For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
It is not the eating and drinking
that gives us the real joy we are looking for…
But the Holy Spirit.
Until the Bridegroom comes…
We have the Holy Spirit demonstrating
the future Kingdom to us…
A Kingdom of Righteousness, Peace and Joy.
While we wait to drink with
the Bridegroom in the coming Kingdom…
We still have new wine and the Holy Spirit.
We may not be in the eternal Kingdom…
But we are able to see the
Kingdom of God in earth as it is in heaven.
All of what we see now is…
Encouraging us to long more for His return.
The coming of the Bridegroom for His Bride
and the King of Kings
when we shall rule and reign
with Him for ever and ever.
Revelation 22:4-5…
4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5 There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.
The time is coming when we will drink
the fruit of the vine in the Kingdom
of the Father with Jesus.
Maybe the first miracle Jesus preformed
also was to tell us of a wedding
where the best wine will be brought out at last.
From Passover to the Table of the Lord
to the Marriage Supper of the Lamb.
The best is yet to come.
